Hiya folks,

My wifes sister is thinking of buying a PS2 but what I heard from her she seems to prefer the old style and not the new slimline.
One guess is that she wants to be able to use hd-loader.

I'm gonna help her install a modchip in it.

The question is, do you think there is any way to find a new "old" style ps2?
or is it secondhand that I have to search.

The sad part is that when buying secondhand is that ít is kinda hard to really know what version it is. Many I asked just don't know or don't wanna tell. and when I ask for the SCPH numer they goes HUH??
I know that V7 is a preferred version but le later V9/10 was they so bad?
I have a friend that have punished his V9/10 with both dvd+r and dvd+rw for almost a year now and it still going strong.

If I can't find her a good old style then she has to go for the new V12.
But if she does, I get little worried about how that laser gonna blow or not.
heard so many different stories now on the laserfix and different types of it.
One says that it works flawless and next say that the laser blows anyway.

Guess my real question is more a suggestion from you all.
what should I recommend her ?

and if she goes with the v12 then how many modchips is suitable for that version? I know Matrix, DMS and Crystal can go with it.. and the muppet (but that name just scares me off).. is there any "budget" type of chip for v12?
I mean, all the above is kinda expensive.

Sorry if I don't make much sense :o

Find a local EB or Gamestop store, look for used ps2 and ask for an scph 39001 specifically one. U can check to see if its the real thing by going in system configuration and pressing the triangle button as someone showed me.

Ok, gonna check with them and see what they have.
I hope they have the old one either in new och a checked one.
that would be alot cheeper for her and then she can get a duo2 because she won't need those nifty extra functions matrix, crystal or dms offers.

She just wants to be able to play backups. she has 2 cats that won't hesitate to use the discs to sharpen the claws :D

I've never seen a cat use a CD to sharpen their claws.

Ok, more like if she forget a disc out that the cats will play with it... shiny thing you know.

I'd try ebay.. finding a V7 wasn't hard for me at all.. People that know what they have will go out of their way to list the version number.. Just Search for PS2 V7 and the number and click off search titles and descriptions..shouldn't be too difficult. and the Crystal's or MI's are nice..

I checked ebay little and the sad part is that the ebay in UK 98% won't send the stuff outside UK... :( wonder why tho.

Ok folks...
I have found these two setups.

1)
PS2 v10 with Matrix Infinity HB + Lasermod

2)
PS2 v7 with DUO2 SE

I guess I would go for the v7 but she isn't so sure.

Can you guys list / tell what the best chouce would be?
I mean, what tells for and what tells against the other setup?

Most peoples here would say v7 I'm sure. I had a v10 with 5k6 chip and it die a year after.

Well, some people won't listen..
I would have taken the V7 because that one is proved to have good laser.
but she only went, but V10 is almost new and so on....
so I gave up trying to convince her...
She bought the V10 with matrix infinity hb + lasermod.

I hope it won't die on her within a year...
I will prompt that she gonna use good quality discs on her backups.
on that part she listen to me atlest.
