memorex true 8x dvd +/-r not recognizing blank media

Yeha, i've got the memorex 8x dvd+/-r drive and it has no problems with cd-r's, but when I put a blank dvd+r into the drive, it does not recognize it...any insight would be appreciated

Try updating your firmware and if that doesn't work try different media.

I updated the firmware with the newest version from the Memorex website, but to no avail...I have not yet tried the alternate media, as they are to be found at the store, where I have not yet been.
