I'm thinking about getting a PS2. Whats the best modchip to use for new compact (US) version of the Playstation 2, or is there even one that works with it? If there is a chip that works where is a good place to order it at?
Try the Matrix Infinity or Crystal Chip - both are excellent! :)

I just ordered a Matrix Infinity from gameworlddirect.co.uk
Make sure you also get a Neofix Xii as it's going in a PStwo.
As you are probably in the US, a well known supplier over there is divineo.com.

Thanks for the info.
Since I'm new to this, is backing up a PS2 game easy? What software should I use? Will Nero work? Is it just a simple matter of installing the mod then backing up the disc and playing the backup disc or is there more to it?
From reading these forums years ago it sounded like Xbox games are very complicated to back up so I'm choosing the PS2, I haven't modded a system and backed up the games I own since the PS one.
Is this a good buy for the chip?

If your going to install the chip yourself purchase it from here www.foundmy.com . Consider this, the PS2 and PSTwo are much more difficult to install a chip in then the PS.
I agree with Sped, When you get the console opened look at ALL the solder points. If you have any doubt about soldering to the chip legs or VIA points i would close it up and send it to a pro. Better this than buying a new PS2.

I'm not worried about soldering the chip in.
My biggest worry is wether or not a modchip does what I'm thinking it does in a PS2......Eg.. Does it work with all backuped games and what software is best to use to back up games? I remember there was one that worked far better than the rest with a PS1. Can a computer CD\DVD Rom drive even read the entire PS2
disc? I know they can't with Xbox games. Is there an easy method for the copy protection on the disc or am I worring too much?
Is there a preference of which console to choose from between the standard PS2 and the slim design as far as which one will work the best with backuped games? Is a PS2 harddrive nessasary for some backuped games? I really like the compact design even though it can't use a harddrive, but like I said I'm a newbe to PS2, just heard it was far simpler to backup your games compared to the Xbox by reading forums years ago, almost as simple as the PS1 was but I havent taken an interest in it since then until now becuase of all the good games the PS2 has to offer. I have hardwood floors and alot of company so I don't want to take a chance on ruining a $50 disc, so backup is definitly for me.
It's all in the Ultimate Info Sticky. Backing up PS2 games is p*ss easy and if you get an Infinity or Crystal chip you'll love it...

I'm leaning toward the crystal chip since I beleive its newer and the site says it works well in the slim PS2, it states that its $42(US) plus shipping and handling for THE CHIP ONLY, does this mean I need something else?

Most likely you will need to get hold of some Kynar wire (30 gauge). It's very fine hook-up wire that is perfect for chip installation.
For your other comment about backing up Xbox games, they are just as easy to do as a PS2 game. You just have to use the Xbox itself to read the game disc. No biggie. Once you do it once or twice, it becomes second nature.

Don't I need a different operating system other than Wix XP to do this? What do you use to connect your Xbox to your P.C. to read games?

XP is probably the best operating system to use.
But to answer your question briefly:
1. First you have to mod the Xbox
2. Load up a program that has FTP connectivity (eg Evolution X dashboard)
3. Connect a crossover network cable between your PC and Xbox
4. FTP into the Xbox and copy the files from the Game DVD onto the PC
5. Make an ISO of the files and burn onto DVD-R.
Everything you would want to know about the Xbox is on Xbox Scene. (http://www.xbox-scene.com) Head on over there if you want more information.
XBOX? Er.... Isn't this a PS2 forum? I think we need to get back on track here, so:
Both the Crystal and Matrix are awesome chips. I have had experiences with them both and haven't had a single problem. I guess it's all down to personal preference. If you would like something a little different and the optional dashboards, go for the Crystal. If you want a down right awesome chip which has been hugely tried, tested and loved, go for the Infinity :)
I couldn't (and still can't) decide... ;)
