Just change byte at offset 0x33A1 to EB in Painkiller.exe and it's sorted!

???
If i just have a HexEditor

Yup! Load the painkiller.exe into a hex editor, find offset 0x33A1 (byte should be 75) then change it to EB and save. Play without the CD :)

I've created a small patch doing the hex edit. Extract to your painkiller\bin directory and execute. It will create a backup called savefile.ero . you may want to keep that file in case a future update may require it.

Eagle, there is a problem with your patch

In a DOS box I get this error:

The file is not at the good size (1474560 octets). ;(

The files size is correct @ 1,474,560 bytes but your patch doesn't like it :( I can't find eropatch, all links are too old and the first one doesn't download anything

Thnx for the credit though :)

Better use PatchFX as it is windows based and works quite fast and is easy to understand:

Someone should upload the fixed main-exe to gcw!

PatchFX is a good patcher, I use it often.

I'll send the EXE to GCW :)

Barry what is your filesize of the uncracked painkiller.exe? and do you have BOOH installed?

BarryB
30-01-2005, 15:32
Both the BOOH and v1.61 EXE are 1,474,560 bytes *BUT* they are not the same file contents! Your patch doesn't seem to work with either file?

Maybe it's because it's a DOS program and not a Win32 console app?

The 1.61 patch updates both games to v1.61 so a new EXE is installed no matter if you have BOOH installed or not.

Why not make a generic patch which works on all current & future updates as I want to bet that the CD-Check has been the same since v1.2, when SD was removed from the main exe

this one beats me. i now re-installed painkiller (without BOOH) 3 times to different directories/harddrives. then applied the 1.61 patch and used the patcher. guess what... it worked everytime.

strange

It's not working for me :(

Not working for me also. Here is something interesting though...

When I tried to delete the patch from the directory, it got the message that it could not be deleted because it was being used by another program. The only way I could get rid of it was to boot into safe mode with console and remove it via command line.

afterdeath: i had this once, too. but logging out and logging in again (no restart) resolved it for me.

this one is a patchfx patch. mayby you're lucky with that one.

I will try it now. And, thanks for working on this man. It is cool that there are people with the ability to make things like this out there.

Hey, the patchfix worked like a charm! Thanks again.

I've just sent a 'Generic' patch for all versions of Painkiller from v1.2 upto v1.61 to GCW made with PatchFX.

Tested it on BOOH and v1.61 plus a few NoCD's I have, I just changed the EB byte back to 75 and ran the patch, it patched it back to EB so looks like the 'Search and Destroy' is working :)

@ Eagle: Very strange, I also got a message saying your patch couldn't find the file even when both were in the same folder? Stick to PatchFX, it's more reliable :)

Regarding Windows not letting you delete files, usually I pop a Command Prompt in the folder where the file is, kill EXPLORER.EXE in Taskmanager and then delete the file via the Command Prompt. I then use the File > New Task (RUN) command in Taskmanager and run EXPLORER.EXE again to get the desktop back :)
