I noticed that my ps2 struggles abit on some backups I have..
The worst one is The Urbz. Backed up on Ritek G04 disc.
Tried it first and that disc just took forever to read and constatnly lockups in the game. Tried again and that one works better but still some lockups.. and the laser you can hear working like nuts from time to time.

I noticed this on Leisure suit larry too.. Ok, no lockups in that game but that laser was working very hard on that game too..

I know, my system is getting old.

You think that a good clean of the lens can help?
or will I need to start checking up the value on pots?

*damn* why does stuff like this alwas happen when there is no way to afford a new ps2...

Try and clean it, but if I was you i'd get a HDD in their and shove the games on their :)

Or get a new laser/v7 console.

Yeah, I was looking earlier today and saw that just the game The Urbz isn't compatible with hd loader. I planned to buy a network adapter and put a HDD in it.. but if it isn't compatible then it wont help for this game atleast.
99% of the backups I have works just fine.. some of the I hear the laser work pretty hard on but no skipping and stuff like that.

Gonna try to clean it and see if that will help.
Havn't opened it up for cleaning since I got it so it might be kinda messy the lens. I have used a cd/dvd cleaner disc once in awhile but that just wipes loose dust and so I think..

A V7 would be nice to have, I have a V5 R version.

Nothing wrong with a v5 r. If cleaning dont work you may want to adjust the pots or invest in a new laser.

Ok.. I will try to clean it by hand and blow all dust out from it. If that don't help I will try to adjust the pot. if that doesn't help then I guess I'öö have to live with it or try to save up for a new laser / console.
I'll keep you informed on success or failure :)

use a hover to get all the dust outa the grill, and a dvd lense cleaner works a treat.

I hoover the grill once ot twice a month just to keep it clean enough so no overheat would take place.
I also use a lenscleaner disc (the one with several small brushes on it) once in awhile too. but I suspect now that last time I let a person bottow it that it gor little missused. THink the brushes was little messy after that.. so they might just have got the problem worse than it was before using it last time.. it had obiously been laying on some flat surface because the brushes was pointing at several directions so they might been laying in something.. who knows.

but thanks for the advice :)

this forum is the best I think. atleast when it comes to help from others and knowledge.

well, off to vaccuum the flat and bring the kids to sleep. THen I can start looking at it.

If that doesnt work, Dismatle your ps2 and take the casing of your laser and adjust the pots and white cog. You can find this infomation on shadowknights sig file.

Yepp. I have found the page with the instructions and I will get a multimeter from a friend tomorrow. So I think I will get some more "reading power" in it soon.

Ok, so far I have had time to clean the lens and played around little with the white cog. also I have greased the rods that the laser glides on.
It got better, but not all good. still little locking up on some games and original DVD movies still load slow. Yeah, origonal dvd movie discs will go to browser screen before it load. a backup on the very same movie will start before the browser screen. funny huh?
well, I just use that as a little test for if the loading gets better because I know it load the original movies just fine before, Yes I have a standalone dvd player for movies :)

Well, gonna see if up the power to the laser will make any difference next. In a day or so.

Is there another way to reach the pots without dismount half the reader unit?
Well, it might not be a big deal taking the rods away and lift the laser out to do it.

All you need to do is unsrew the black screw above the bar where the laser is sitting on. and the laser will come clean off, i think the laser has died personally and would invest in a new one. Try Divineo they sell replacement parts.

well, even if it is on it's way to die it can't hurt try to get it going for another few months. can't afford a new laserusit right now so I have few options.

1. Don't play the backup of the titles that give me most problems.
2. Give up playing
3. Try to fix some more good workingdays out of it.

You need to quit playing dvd movies in it period.

Yes, i read the post. All i am saying is dvd movies dont belong in a PS2. Its bad on the laser.

ottoman

Almost as bad for the laser as backups!! :D

Thry looking here (http://fileforums.com/showthread.php?t=62810&highlight=laser+height+adjust)

I did a lengthy explanation on how to adjust the laser height for optimum performance and have had very good results without having to adjust pots.

Thanks Ottoman, I will probably do that tonight then when the kids sleep.
havn't had time yet for try the pots and what you said in that thread is indeed a nice way to do it....even if it is timeconsuming..

WHen you say from very bottom. do I just turn the cog until the unit drops down?

ottoman
06-01-2005, 11:46
yep. with the ps2 the right way up turn either the cog or both cogs ( depending on model) so that the laser runners are in their lowest position ( laser furthest from the disc) and go from there :)

never did get that ps2 to work, got another 1 to do now aswell argh i hate doing it.

Dustpuppy
06-01-2005, 14:52
Ok, now I have tried the way ottoman described.
what can I say. the cog already at that spot. Right in the middle of the range.
Upped the laser by 5% and nothing really changed.. little better maybe..
But it doesn't sound like it gonna fly in the roof anymore.. I mean.. it was pretty loud before and I guess something got better.. it works more quiet now.
THink I'll leave it as this for awhile. if it gets any worse then I'll can mess with it some more.

On part I think might be little strange.
I have a 30004-R (V5) shall I really have a KHS-400C laser in it?
Didn't the R types have a different laser?

seaneyb2003

v5 has 2 different ones the unit i have atm is a r type but other v5's have the 400c range.

Dustpuppy
07-01-2005, 03:09
Yeah, but I thought all 30004-R the R model of the ps2 had R model lasers.
thats why I got little confused you know..

Warlock

You sure you got a v5?? There are a few 3xxxR consoles that are in fact v4.

Dustpuppy

I'm pretty sure.. I followed the V5 diagram when installing the DUO chip atleast...
