OK I'm a complete noob here & have only just registered so kick me in the right direction if I'm posting in the wrong section etc.

What I've sussed so far is that I can get any pc HDD (preferably on the compatable list or by taking the screws out of the network card)

I then need HDloader, I take it this is a CD that I have to boot off.

After this I can then play backups of my games from the HDD which is plugged into my ps2 network card.

If I'm right with all of the above then things are looking good but I have no mod chip. do I need one or is the whole point of the HDLoader software & HDD to save me having to do this ?

Thanks for any help,
like I said I'm very new to this & am just working out what I do or don't need to do.
worto.

yep thats correct. You do not need a modchip if you have the orginal HD Loader. DO NOT GET HD ADVANCED! (rubbish clone)

If you get a modchip, find out your ps2 version, best is v7 with Matrix Infinity in my opinion.

Also Make sure you get GOOD MEDIA! Ritek G04.

Thank you :)

Also do not get a slide card, this WILL wreck your laser, so will bad media :) And having your console on the carpet. I also advise you buy a side stand to help prevent dust getting into your console.

my GT3 is going out and can i backup a game without needing a mod chip or boot disc?

I plan to buy that HD loader eventually. But i want to backup my GT3 before it's to late. I have already had to repair the disc once

you can back it up, you can't play the backed up version yet though (duh).

@ H|LL: why is putting your ps2 on the carpet bad? and why is putting your ps2 on its side good, how will it prevent dust from coming in?

i can't play the backup without a modchip or load it to the HD loader? If i moded my PS2 and backup GT3. Would the HD loader see that it is a ps2 game and let me load it to the HD? Or will it say "please insert orginal ps2 media"?

I am just trying to keep my options open in case this or this happens ;)

Why would you need to backup with HDLoader? That's the point, without a chip you can use HDLoader, but you'll have to load your originals on...

Thanks for the help, looks like I'm generally aiming in the right direction then :)

Having a PS2 on the carpet allows the dust to enter quicker though the fan and settle on the motherboard/laser. Which will wreck your laser fast, just like uses rubbish media.

Dont forget about static electricity.

One last thought. Hd loader only works with ps2 games. Don't plan on saving psx games on it because it won't work. You gotta have a chip for psx game backups. Overall, if you can find hd loader -you will love it. :)
