I have a swap disc no solder mod chip that my mom bought me and I recently installed (I know bad). I bought some TDK DVD-Rs (Since I have an old PS2) and I just tried to backup my copy of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. It didn't work, but then I made a copy with a Hewlet Packard DVD+R and it worked fine. I read through some of the responses and Ritek's were mentioned. Has anyone had any problem with these? Are they pretty much guaranteed to work?

Riteks I would say would be the best brand media to get. However it seems that they've changed their dye for their dvdrs. The G05 have mixed results from people, some say it works fine, others say it doesn't.... I have yet to test them on my ps2, should be back in a week or so (Thanks spedmetal!). The G04 is probably one of the best media around. Another brand which people are claiming is good is Taiyo Yuden. You can order these online from meritline.com or rima.com. Meritline though is supposedly selling crap dye dvdr media. So for the moment buying from them isn't the best idea. Try out the Taiyo Yuden media, it's supposed to be very good media and is being recommended by many people. :D

I've used TDK's and they work fine.
The swap disk sucks. I have one and lots of newer games don't work with it. I bought an Infinity and never had a problem since. There is a site for the swap disk that adds a patch or something like that to the games to make them work with the swap magic but it's a hassle. www.swapmagicfix.com hope this helps. :)

My friend and I have been using Maxell 4x DVD+R's.
He tried some other ones, but told me that these work fine in his messiah2 ps2.

When using HD Loader to install games, i've noticed that these maxell's 'read' at about half the speed of an original DVD, which i'm guessing is pretty decent speed for a DVD+R.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a good source for reviews on the quality/manufacturing of readable dvd's

If anyone knows of one, please post it

Thanks for the info guys, unfortunatly I spoke too soon when I said GTA SA worked it hangs a lot and takes forever to load with the HP disks. I tried 3 other types and it still doesnt work, finally my Taiyo Yudens showed up and guess what they don't work at all, this is really frustrating. Various disks work better than others, but none of them are playable. I'm going to look into that swapdisk fix, I don't think that is it since I can get the game to play with some disks, but it's worth a shot. I'm also going to try and back up another game and see if the verbatims or sonys work.

So Far I've tried:
Hewlet Packard DVD+R (Most successful)
Verbatim DVD+R
Sony DVD+R
TDK DVD-R
Taiyo Yuden DVD+R (Worst)

Yeah, it's the +R which is your problem. Taiyo -Rs are the dogs b*ll*cks ;)

Ah crud DVD-R? I bought the Taiyos from a link TylerDurden posted. Do they work well in certain versions of the PS2? Oh well I odered HDLoader so I'll just backup the games on that. One concern I have is my Gradius V original does not work unless I use my swap disk on it. I don't have this problem with any of my other games, does the swap disk work with HDLoader? If not I can just FTP an ISO to my PS2 drive right?

I have owned or modded just about every version PS2 at one time or another. I have never had good results using + media or RW media with any of them. Ritec was the best but they changed there dye and are now having mixed results when it comes to PS2. The Taiyo Yuden dvd-r i ordered from Rima.com are item #1736. They load as smooth and fast as the originals game disc. Try them :)

He he, ok, I ordered the DVD-R Taiyos, but this is the last set. I'm not buying anymore DVDs I already have enough to last me until the next media standard comes out. Thanks very much for the info guys.
