About 4 months ago my girlfriend brought a DVD Backup home from one of her Co-workers that she wanted to watch. When I seen it was a backup I new for sure it wasn't going to play in my un-moded PS2. She said that the guy had found a patch that allowed him to play backups in any PS2 without a mod chip. I figured what the hell, lets give it a shot. Sure enough, I poped it in and the movie played away. I was amazed. Now, 4 months later, my girlfriend no longer works there and I finally got a DVD Burner. I've gotten DvDs to play in actual DVD players but just can't find away to get the PS2 to read them. Any of you know how the hell he did that? Thanks.

Of course, its easy. There is no special patch or magical power that allows this. Its known. PS2's play backed up or DVDR movies.

Then how come I can't get my backups to play in it? They play fine in the regular DVD player but don't come on in the PS2. I used DVDShrink and Nero to make the back up.
Prolly cause you are using cheap media.

I am using FUJIFILM 8x DVD-R's. Are these classified cheap? What media should I use?

FujiFilm is mediocre. I was a die hard Ritek fan but recently they've changed dyes or something and I dont like the way they are now. I've heard that Taiyo Yuden brand dvdr is great, so I will be trying them out as soon as my current ritek stock runs out.
Also your problem could be your ps2. Depending on what version it is, it may now be having problems playing dvdr.
Please let me know how you are making your backups.

Well, I first use DvD Shrink with AnyDVD running to reduce the size of the Movie. Then I burn the movie onto DVD with Nero.

Even though I dont like DVDShrink it will work to make you some bootable dvdr backups. I think your prob is the media your using. Try the ones I recommended.

Well with DL discs its kinda hit and miss. And that depends on the ps2 itself. As you may know PS2 lasers can be really picky.

I can't get my dvd backups to play in my modded PS2, my regular dvd's take awhile to load. Then the backups end up saying no data or disk read error.

What chip do you have in your ps2?

I think it is a NEO. Its been awhile since I had it put in.

Ok, Neo's will ruin your laser. Although later ones added a capacitor to stop this, it still wound up overflowing and sending too much power to your laser. Your laser is probably shot now.

Do you know of anyone that I can send my PS2 to for laser repair? Also do I need to replace the chip? I don't want to...because I am getting a new PS2 after the holidays! Thanks,
BK

Check the Installers Sticky for reliable installers, thats in the PS2 section. Yes its the chips fault so even if you put in a new laser the NEO will burn it out a lot sooner than if you used a newer chip. But if your gonna get a new ps2 why not just hold off.

Just check that the laser doesnt just need a clean , i was told that mine needed a new laser and when i took the hoover to it and cleaned out the dust it worked fine ,lol
