Hi, I have a v4 ps2 I believe with a messiah 2 mod. There's a strange clicking sound that came from my ps2. It got to the point where I started hitting the thing and for awhile it refused to play any games (Stayed at the floating icon screen with browser and the other option, didn't go into rsod...thank god) . In frustration I took apart the ps2 and went to check the laser. I fooled around a bit and out of curiousity and at the point of giving up, I took off the little black cover that is around the laser. I tried the system with that off and..... no more clicking! :D I put the ps2 back together and it started working!! But..... now it started clicking again and I'm ready to start taking it apart and fooling around with the laser once again. Anybody have anyt idea whats the matter with my ps2? When the ps2 was open, nothing moved (laser and all, the sound came from the laser I guess (inside the black little cover?) ) Any ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
The laser is on its way out. I would sell the console and get a newer version.

how about changing the laser? replacing it? will that do? If possible, can anyone suggest a place that will do it around Vancouver or preferably Victoria BC? Or perhaps the west coast US..... I'm at school in Victoria and will be pretty pissed (and bored) if my ps2 is a bust, especially when all I have are my backups since I left my originals at home! Thanks warlock for the reply :D

V4 lasers have always been crap. You may wanna try looking for a v7. At least those would be good for replacing a laser if it ever goes out on ya.

I see.... so for now could I replace the laser and then later (when I get more cash and get back home) get a newer version ps2 and take my modchip out of my v4 and put it in the new ps2? If I replace the laser, it should work for awhile at least (considering this one lasted alright), at least to hold me out till I get home. :D I wouldn't be able to replace the v4 laser with a better laser would I, if I were to send it to a guy to replace the laser? Thanks for the help! Keep it coming! :) ;)
I'd just get a new mod in your new console. Infinity should be good... :)

yeah..... the chip isn't the problem. Can someone please answer my question regarding the laser replacement?

oops scratch that :D
I thought I had a v4 b/c of the serial being U5.... I didn't check the SCPH. My SCPH is 39001. This means that my ps2 is a v7 right? If so, should I change the laser since this laser is supposed to be pretty good? I don't really want to buy a whole new system cuz of the modchip and also the mod that I had done to it (Blinking PS2 light :D ).
Warlock: Thanks for the link. I was considering sending my ps2 to newagepsx (they installed my mod and chip), but now I can consider sending it to the other guy. What do you think?
edit----
Now I figured out my ps2 will work when I leave the cover off   . Otherwise if I put it on the ps2 won't read the discs...... Also every so often I need to tinker with the laser cover thing (Black cover that says Sony on the laser). Also I play with the screw next to it that lifts the laser up and down. In what way would changing the height affect the read, will raising it increase the laser's intensity or whatever and lowering it decreases? This is still a laser problem though right? Thanks!

I have another question that most likely is due to my laser, but I just want to be sure.
I recently got my copy of Naruto 2 (Damn happy!) I made a backup of it, and it works. However there are some issues where it skips every so often, but it's very subtle. I tried my original, and it does so as well, but in different spots. This is most likely a laser issue right? The skipping and also sometimes the lock ups. Just need to make sure it's not the game! Thanks! :D

That could be due to either a bad original, in which the bad parts were copied to your backup. Or your laser is having problems like mentioned above.

Thanks Tyler for the reply :D When I restart, the places that locked up before don't lock up, it seems random. Sounds more like a laser issue (So I'm hoping). Guess I'll get a new laser when I get the estimate from richpsxparts. Then when someone mods the pstwo (small one), I'll pick up one of those modded.
Sounds like laser then :)

Ok, here's a thread coming back from the dead.....
I notified 2 dealers so far concerning repairs for my ps2. Here's the results:
Richpsxparts:
Contacted them 2 times, took about a week for them to get back to me. They told me that the laser gear is the problem. They will charge me $34.95 for a new gear, installation, testing, and return shipping. If I were to need a new laser, they would charge me $69.95 which will include a new laser, installation, testing, a 90 day guarantee, and return shipping.
NorCalMods:
Contacted them once and next day heard a response. They told me that they need to check what exactly is the problem, before they tell me what they think. They will be charging me a fee of $60 for checking my PS2 and return shipping. As well as another $60 if I do indeed need another laser.
I'm also at the moment contacting SoCalMods as well to see if they can try to fix my ps2.
I'm wondering you anyone is willing to lend their opinions on this matter, as to which would you deal with. I don't suppose NorCalMods would be willing to negotiate a deal closer to that of richpsxparts.
I'm currently located in BC, Canada (Victoria/Vacouver Island), so NorCalMods or SoCalMods would involve quicker shipping :D .
I haven't seen any results of richpsxpart's jobs or comments on them. What do you guys think?

Bump anyone?
I think for a difference of only $15 i would contact spedmetal at norcalmods. If it took a week to get a return email how long will it take to get the console back once its sent?. Nothing against richpsxparts, I buy parts from him. I just think Sped would do you a good job and be honest about whats wrong with the console. I would rather spend 15 extra bucks and get my console back in a week than save it and wait a month for my console to be returned ;) .
I've recently started having this problem and I did a little errortesting on the ps2. The problem I have is that the piece of plastc that connects the laser tray to the arm running it doesn't connect well. So what happens is that it sitts on top of the marks where it should run, hence the clicking sounds.
I push it into place and it works for a while, maybe one two hours but then it jumps off again and I have to open the damn thing and fix it again.
Any ideas on how to fix it? Doesn't feel like a problem that should cost 35$ to fix.
I think it was Ottoman who fixed this with his - I think... :)
