View Full Version : Roms Are Ok Now ??
i have found and read this :
The US Copyright office has declared that roms for obsolete and unsupported systems are now public domain.
woohooo !!!!
Source?
Very unlikely that Nintendo and Sega would just let that kind of thing happen. Especially considering that games are still being made for practically every system ever made.
would like to read an official Gov. page too
http://www.allmyroms.com/freemameroms.htm
Not much of an official statement is it? Loads of sites write stuff like that just to make their stuff look legit. I dont get how the US Government can just handover copyrights that has nothing to do with them. Yeah, Yeah, we all know that the US Government can do whatever the hell they want ;)
Unless I see something from an offiical source, like say the US .gov site, then I say its all bollocks.
i have found this on it soo far :

If it were true, you would read about it alot more on the net, and all those sites that nintendo have threatened to sure for hosting n64 games would have nothing to worry about.
cool, gud if they are :)
I need a Doctor V64 for my N64. But its like £100 - £250 :| lol
The big question remains when is a certain system becomes obsolete, nintendo can still claim that they are making NES carts just to avoid their roms becoming "public domain".
Until the game makers tell which carts/systems are free, until then no rom will be free

are illegal..
if u download em
Hello again.
Unfortunately, we stopped producing N64 games, but you can still find great
games, both brand new and used through the second-hand market.
Sincerely,
Nintendo of America, Inc.
i guess the games are obsolete
Obsolete how? Just because Nintendo America has stopped distributing games (the Japenese Arm has'nt), does not mean roms are now legal. I think you need to learn about Copyright laws. ;)

thats cuz it is
Usually when a company decides something is free, they announce it. (The actual company does, like what happened with Tribes?)
Now for nintendo to announce that (which it didnt) means that they have a hidden reason for doing so. Never out of the goodness of their heart will they just say "here, instead of me making 1 cent every 10 years out of this, you can have it for free" Corporations actually like to keep patents and copyright stuff lying around forever cause they might just get some money out of it (sometimes by infringement lawsuits even)

Just like Nintendo is doing at the moment with the release of the so called NES Classics Range on the GBA

Hmmmmmmmmm I still wouldn't do it.
"(2) “Obsolete” shall mean “no longer manufactured or reasonably available in the commercial marketplace.”"
what about this?
