Gladius - good - for me to poop on

I've recently played this game a few times after seeing and hearing a bunch of good reviews and once again I just walk away disappointed. Anybody else got an opinion on this stinker? Or know why anybody likes it?

I know a friend that was hooked on the game for a while. Never played it myself though, probably because I didn't think it looked good. So uh, it is a stinker to me too i guess.
