Just loaded a new utility which allows scrutiny of all processes running on my machine. The utility is TPower from ZD Labs.

Most of the processes are from MicroSoft, my anti-virus software, and my software firewall. HOWEVER, I have something else suspicious:

Filename: cdac11ba.exe
Company: Macrovision
Description: Digital Rights Managament Software.

I don't know how this got on my machine. Does anyone have any familiarity with this process, and is it normal? Is is a problem?

Thanks for your help and comments.

OK. I ran Adware 6.0 and it did not find the executable "cdac11ba.exe" anywhere. Also, a search of files using Windows tools did not turn it up.

I finally located the file in the following directory:
WINDOWS > SYSTEM32 > DRIVERS > CDAC11BA

Interestingly, I also found another file in the DRIVERS folder; CDAC15BA.
Not sure what this, but it is probably another extension of the Macrovision system.

My utility, TPower, allowed me to detect the executable running in the background and provided a tool to "kill" the program, but when I rebooted the executable was right back again . . . . running in the background.

I relabeled the file, CDAC11BA, as "JUNK" and restarted Windows. The executable is no longer running. :D

I don't know if I may have done anything to damage my system by doing this, but I will report back if the computer does anything strange.

Would really love to hear from anyone who has detailed knowledge of this program.

Thanks ! ! !

FOLLOWUP:

When I found the above reported (parasite?) file, I also used the "TPower" utility to find a related program, "C-DillaCdaC11BA," running in the background. The "TPower" utility provided a means to disable that background program, and I did so.

Since that time I have observed NO unusual performance or characterictic changes in my computer. I have burned both DVDs and CDs with the machine after this change, therefore I have to conclude that this program serves no useful function. At the same time, I do not know if it does any harm. I still have no clue as to how it got onto my computer.
