you need these things:
1.hd loader cd!
2.HDD compatible with hd loader (Maxtor are the best i have a 160gb 7200rpm and 8mb cahase
3. games that you own to copy to the harddrive and your ready to go!!

It's not quite that simple:

1. The drive must be IDE, but not SATA
2. The maximum supported size is 120GB
3. You need a Network Adapter
4. Western Digital drives are a no, no.
5. Many drives also either don't fit or don't work. You should check compatibility with this site: http://ps2drives.x-pec.com

EDIT: You beat me to it, Eakinsme, :)

correct.. except #2.. the maximum amount of space hd loader allows you to use on a harddrive is 128gb. i have a 160gb harddrive and it works perfectly!! recomended sizes are 40-120gb but smaller and lager also do work!

Yeah, sorry. I meant the maximum you can feasibly use, so there really is no point getting anything larger... :)

yea i know about the 120 gig size
i was look at that same hdd compatibility... it says somethin about versions
so do i really have to stare at every single ps2 in order to find out if i can use it?
and whats the network adapter? is it on certain ps2s... or is it an attachment that i buy?
im not a big fan of wd so no prob there

true but when i was at my computer store (the following prices are in cdn.$$) i was going in to pick up the 120gb maxtor hdd, when i looked beside it and saw a 160 gb harddrive. the reason i went to 160 is because the 120gb hdd was $124 while the 160gb haddrive was $138. so i figured i could put at least one more game on so why not pay the xtra $14 for 40 more gigs.. plus if i ever get sick of it and protection comes on every game i can put it in my pc and have more space!

there are ps2s that come with an on-line pack..if you can see one buy that.. if you dont u can also buy the network adapter seperatly but its a lot cheaper if u get it as an on-line pack!

k
so i goto bestbuy
get a ps2 with the online pack (dont have to worry bout the version right?)
then i pick up any hdd (noone really answered if i needed specs besides 120 and IDE and no WD)
then come home get the hdloader.. later on load it and im good?
im paranoid as crap
so any detail will help

Basically, you got it. Just get a drive off that compatibility site that's quoted working and you'll be fine :)

This place has them for $22 USD, I have only used this place once so I can’t say for sure they are great, but I didn’t have any trouble with them.
