Preferably, one that is also able to play PS1 backups.

Holly crap man! You finally got a PS2 and the best you could do is a V1????!!!!

The V1 is very hard to mod, and has a crappy laser. But if you must have a suggestion....Duo or Duo2, Apple Pro or Apple 3, (magic V only supports V5 and newer consoles, guess they figured everyone knows the V4 and earlier are sh**y and didn’t work them into the code) or if you want to go high end look at the Infinity.

It wasn't my call dude, I bought it preowned at EB, it was boxed, so it was at random that I got a v1.

Anyhow, thanks for the info, I'll be on the look out for those chips.

Unlucky, unlucky, unlucky. :)
Does it read discs OK? Best thing is to go to Sped's page and do the laser check thing. It's worth seeing if it's worth modding first...

It's worth seeing if it's worth modding first... Exactly, I dont mod anything older than a v5.

A good mod solution would be to sell it on again and get a second hand version 7 and mod that. ;)

It works good so far (I bought some original games), anyway, I do have a 90-day warranty, so if it fcks up in that time, I'll ask for an exchange... of course, I wasnt thinking about modding it anytime soon, because of that.

As for the laser test, would you mind giving me a link to Sped's page?
