Xbox v1.6 is here ... first pictures and analyse!
>> booyeah on the xbox-scene forums bought a new Xbox console today and he's the first one reporting to us with the new xcalibur videochip.
It was already reported some time ago a new xbox videochip would be used in new xboxes (thought to be first in the crystal LE Xbox ... but apparently all those were still v1.4 (Focus videochip)).
But now that we saw the first pictures of this v1.6 apparently much more changed then just the videochip ... it's basicly a total new board design. (LCP is still there but with point 4 open ...). "D0" probably also moved as the "D0-area" totally changed.
It looks like it won't be possible to put an extra 64MB ram anymore as the extra places to solder these chips have changed.
Also ... it looks like there's no onboard TSOP anymore. The BIOS chip might have become a read-only chip (that rectangle chip above the LPC?) so it can't be re-programmed anymore or maybe they placed the TSOP on the back of the motherboard now.
Booyeah's new Xbox has a philips DVD drive.
It's unknown at this moment if there is extra or new security. This Xbox will (probably) require a new bios (with support for the new xcalibur videochip) and maybe more.

now

i didnt like that they moved the d0 either
TylerDurden

Whats wrong with moving the D0? Someone will find it and then all we'll have to do is get a longer wire.
Tyler!

01-05-2004, 21:35
yea
thatll take care of the solder chips
the non-solder chips however..
itd have to be a diff cihp for that by itself
or a movable d0 thingy
TylerDurden
01-05-2004, 21:40
Hmm, yeah I didnt think about those nonsolder chips. Well maybe you xbox'ers will have to learn how to solder. LOL!

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=209029 this is where all the info is. the whole board looks hella diffrent to the other versions where the hell is the bios chip and the do?  :)
This really sucks big time.
Now we have to track down the D0 again. Cant add more RAM since there is no more emtey RAM slots, creat a new BIOS for the new video encoder, and who knows what else.
Freaking ****bites.

Surely it would have changed to fix that as well.

Ya, I'm sure they have added new security to these new v1.6s to prevent people from "softmodding" them as we know right now. With in a few weeks I’m sure we will see new BIOSes from Team X or Team E or both supporting these new boards.
As for the solderless chips, guess your SOL for right now. I’m sure it wont be long ‘til a new design comes out for them as well.

will it ever stop?
no says one of my friends:
"the engineering department has a coke machine. And they always find a way to get free cokes out of it."
"then Coke comes and makes a new protection for it."
"then the engineers have to figure out another way"
"its back and forth."
soo true
It was made by man, it can be cracked by man.

- Xboxes with a manufacture date of 2004-03-22 are v1.6. 2004-03-11 are still v1.4. So far these very recently produced xboxes are only found in US stores ... but it's only a matter of time before they come everywhere (when old stock clears).
- We now saw pictures (by pROvIs - see below) of the backside of the board. There's no TSOP there either - so bios/kernel (firmware) must be on another chip. First guess is still that new "Xyclops" labeled chip above the LPC. It's unknown yet if the onboard bios/kernel will be flashable or not. Will have to be researched by HW teams.
MS might have permanently strap "d0" on the "TSOP bus" (on MCPX) to "0", and build-in an LPC boot ROM instead (oz_paulb).
- We do NOT know yet if it's still possible to force boot from (external) LPC. Neither do we know yet if the LPC bus changed (apart from the visual difference that there is a LPC point #4 now - this point was not on older xbox versions). So it's also unknown yet if the current modchip hardware will be compatible with the v1.6
- The 5530 and 5713 retail kernel (seen in xbox v1.4/v1.5) has already support for the new xcalibur chip. There's is no hacked bios/kernel yet based on these builds. Yoshihiro (GueuX'NeT Team) said these builds would require a new init table.
- The audiochip is also gone. The new videochip (labeled xcalibur) is bigger then the one used before (conexant/focus) so it's possible audio and videochip are now combined in this new xcalibur chip (the joker).
- The new 'xyclops' and 'xcalibur' have not been identified yet as any known chips. These might be custom chips made by/for MS or maybe these are just relabeled/renamed chips.
- Modchip teams are showing interest for this new v1.6 xbox and will probably start research as soon as they manage to get one of these v1.6 xboxes. I saw in the forum thread SmartXX will get 2 v1.6 xboxes soon and Team Xecuter is doing a public request for v1.6 xboxes:
If anyone has one of these boxes we will pay $300 for it (so you can buy a moddable version and get your money back in the process). There is no Xbox that we have been unable to crack before and we see no reason that we cannot do it again.
We have several hardware engineers who work for Xecuter so we will buy at least 4 of these boxes.
To help us in purchasing one of these boxes please use this thread on our forums.
We can bust this, we just need the console on our workbench :)
I'm sure OzXodus, Xbox-Linux and other teams interested in hardware will also do research on this new board.
DMS has the same offer for also 300 bucks plus shippin

More xbox v1.6 info
>> From hamtitampti on SmartXX Forums:
Today, I played with the I2C bus.
The I2C temperatue sensor dissapeared.
Or I have false address, who knows.
I attached a dump of a startup of the I2C codes.
BTW: Interesting new findinds in the new Bios already and it looks so, that there will be no "universal" bios now, which works on all boxes.
v1.6 will need seperate bioses.
THE PIC is here
The video encoder moved to 0x70
Temperature gone
No 10 (or 20) seconds temperature askings from PIC anymore (logically)
The Video Encoder Traffic is "bulk" and not BYTE/WORD anymore.
And from my feeling: it looks like "encrypted"
EEprom hdd key also changed, but already idendified and found.

Great this means that I have a stack of AppleX and DuoX chips that will be shortly useless...
I used to just love opening up new models in front of customers, back in the day of the PS1 (before great forums like this were so abundent) and going... "oh... this one is... umm... diferent... Unlike what I said - this is not going to take 15 minutes while you watch - please leave it with me and hopefully I will have it solved by tomorrow..."

Team Xecuter: Backups on 1.6 - No Solder Solution Possible
>> From teamxecuter.com:
Not sure if we made it clear in the last news post but the X2.3 mod worked just fine on the v1.6 Xbox. Original test was with the 5838 MS Bios. New update is that we have now also tested with a crudly patched Bios to boot unsigned code however we are currently reverse engineering the Xcalibur code to implement into the X2 / X3 sources which will take some time.
We're trying to get our hands on older version of X2 (its been a while heh) to test if they still work due to the re-emergance of LFRAME. Will also be interesting to test out the cheapmod method - will grab some SST's later today from the workshop and do some more testing for those that have been requesting - however i'm sure many of you can test this stuff yourselves. Our coders have now received their 1.6 Boxes so they are splitting their time between X3 work and 1.6 work, be assured we are working on it.
Also looking at an easier 1.6 fix and a pretty cool no solder solution (!) - watch this space.

actually as far as their spec's are concerned it is only 1.0 to 1.5 compatible but with dual bios - no mention of the 1.6...
edit: - hey spedmetal did you kill your post... seems you realised the same thing about the applex 6

Yeah oops...you caught me....on the-console-corne.com 's page they have it listed as being compatible with 1.6.... When I looked at the apple team’s page and reread the specs.... I deleted that last post.

:D :p
You know what the funny thing is though, is I looked at this the other day and could have sworn the apple teams site said v1.6 also.....maybe after the news of xbox's being killed with some bios they besided to remove the 1.6 from its list of features....I dont know...
