PIONEER DVR-A07 vs DVR-107 ? ? ?

Having recently ordered, but not yet received, a Pioneer DVR-107 recorder, I find that there is ALSO a Pioneer DVR-A07.

It appears to be the same product. Can anyone shed any light on this nomenclature question?

Anyone have any experience with this recorder? Does it work well? Anyone running 8X DVD media in it?

They are both the exact same drives, nothing different in performance.

The difference between them is that the A07 is the retail version and the 107 is the OEM version. Retail comes with cables and software and a pretty box, OEM comes with just bare drive (and is usually cheaper). So it's up to the consumer to decide if the extra cables and software is worth the few extra £££

Thanks for the information. I have ordered the DVR-107 and plan to install it in a stand-alone USB-2 enclosure.

I have downloaded the instructions and specifications from a Pioneer site on the Internet. Cables are cheap these days, so cables and fancy packaging might be a thing of the past.

The drive comes with PioData DVD-R disks. I have no experience with this brand, but I know it is not the standard Pioneer (expensive) media.

I, and many others would recommend getting RITEKG04 dye type disks. These offer great reliability and compatibility.
It is a dark purple dye and most websites will announce what dye type the disk is anyway.

If you're in UK then www.svp.co.uk is good for these disks.

Yup then you can use a hacked firmware to burn those Ritek GO4 4x rated discs at 6x-8x.

Are you using the Pioneer 107 ? ?

I didn't know that the Ritek G04 disks would burn at 6x or 8x. Sounds like that might be an indicator of quality.

Does the drive automatically select the burn speed?

Im actually using the AO7. But the firmwares are the same for both drives. I have mine flashed with the 4x-2-8x hack. It also lets me read my original dvd movies past the 2x reading limit set by pioneer.

Setting the burn speed depends on your burning programs.

From the above posting I am assuming that the A07 and the 107 are hardware identical, and now you have confirmed that they are also firmware identical.

Is is safe to assume that you are getting good performance from your A07 ? ?

Look I've just bought the DVR-107 and I am having trouble burning normal CDR's. I know DVD Writers aren't that great at burning CDR's but they still should be capable of doing so. My crapy HP CD Writer only goes up to 16x write whereas the DVR-107 can write at 24x but I get faster write times with the HP even though its running at a slower speed?

The problems don't just stop there, I haven't been able to burn a single working disc whether it be just data or audio. The buffer level is all over the place whilst burning and when it gets to the end it says write fail using both Nero and Burn Now which came with the drive. It could hardly be the media as I've tried using both Imation and Verbatim discs. I haven't tried writing a DVD yet as I only just got the drive.

Sorry you are having such bad luck with the new Pioneer drive. I have only used it for burning DVDs, and I have not experienced a failure yet.

Granted, my experience is limited to backing-up only about 6 movies, but they have all burned just fine. I have used both Ritek and PioData DVD discs. As we all know, Ritek = Ricoh. I don't know who makes the PioData media for Pioneer, but they seem to work well on the Pioneer 107 drive.

Yeah thanks I just hope the drive isn't faulty because I can live with it not burning CDR's that's what my HP Burner is for. If I may ask, what program are you using to backup your DVD's? As I've only just got into the scene and I would like to know what program works best with this drive.

I can't say that my program/media/burner combination is the best or only successful solution, but I use:

Pioneer 107 Burner
Ritek or PioData DVD Media
"AnyDVD" and "CloneDVD" programs in tandem to read, compress, and burn the DVD backup.

Search this forum for "AnyDVD" and "CloneDVD" items. You'll find lots of information and advice.
