Following on from the success of EyeToy: Play and Eyetoy: Groove, SCEE has announced EyeToy: Chat - the console-world's first foray into video-phonecalls.
the console-based messenger software allows players with a PS2, Network Adapter and EyeToy camera to video communicate in real-time with friends anywhere in the world, at anytime. They can also leave 30 second video messages if those friends are not around.

Parents will also be pleased to hear that Sony has seen fit to include a world of safety measures to overcome people intending to use Eyetoy: Chat for evil. SCEE has been working closely with children's charities to develop the security present in the communications-based title, resulting in a registration system to ensure maximum protection.

You can also store and block friends on a list and play games like chess, checkers and naval wars (nothing to with belly-button lint-flicking, we can assure you) against those very same friends. Talking for hours with your friends is also completely free - well, it's no extra charge on top of your broadband bill - meaning long distance relationships will possibly last longer all around the world. Well done, Sony!

To use this unique messaging service, you'll need a PS2, a TV, the EyeToy: Chat disc, the EyeToy camera and you'll also need to register with the PS2 network service - free with broadband adapter.

Talking with friends, for free, will be possible this Summer, though the price is yet to be confirmed. Check the screenshots to see what it'll look like.
