Whatever you do dont go back to VHS.
Im thinkin its the media your using. If your dvds play in the drive that made them then they should work. About dvd+r doesnt always boad well in standalone dvd players, neither do some dvdrw's. So Id recommend using dvd-r. You should have better luck running that in just about any dvd player.
Please post your results.

I like using DVD Decrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.com/download.asp) with DVD Shrink (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm) and Nero 6. It gets rid of the Layer Break and, you can customise were the movie starts and ends.
Or go here (http://www.slysoft.com) and for $50 (I think) you can get AnyDVD which makes it so your computer (even the OS) thinks the DVD is encryption free.
P.S. If you don't have Nero 6, you can have Shrink make a ISO image from the Files and then use DVD Decrypter to burn the ISO image to a disk.
That means that you can have completely free dvd backups.

still no joy here is a copy of the e-mail i got back from 321 tech support but none of these helped either so will keep u informed
Here is a list of things for you to try to make sure your system is fully compatible with our software.
1.
One thing you could also try is download the latest drivers for your burner on your product website here is a link that may help
http://www.dvdxcopy.com/support/search.asp?s=ID&i=1247
2.
Your Media is important ie. The blank DVDs. We have recently discovered that some drives can be choosy regarding supported blank media. Here is the list of officially supported media from the manufacturer:
DVD +R/-R:
4x: Mitsubishi, Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden
2.4x: Richo, Mitsubishi, TDK, FujiFilm, Verbatim, Vivastar, Ritek, Taiyo Yuden
DVD +RW/-RW:
Ricoh, Mitsubishi, TDK, FujiFilm, Verbatim, Sony, Memorex, Emtek, HP, Vivastar, Smartbuy
Please try one of these blanks, as they should work much better with your drive.
3.
Also: The Black List is a list of software known to interfere in the burning process and contains the following items.
InterActual Player, PC Friendly Player, INCD, Hp-DLA,
NewDotNet domains, Gator, OfferCompanion, System Mechanic,
DirectCD or Drag to Disk, EasyCD, B's Clip, GoBack, DLA: Also HP-DLA, Veritas DLA, Zone Alarm,
McAfee Anti-Virus, Norton Anti-Virus, StopZilla, MyStorageGuard, Napster 2.0
Also other writing software can cause conflicts.
After uninstalling these in the Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel, you will need to reboot, then run the ForceASPI utility to resume full functionality of your machine.
4.
Make sure to update your Windows Operating System to newest service pack level and all updates from WindowsUpdate: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
This will ensure that your system is up to date. Also, please update DirectX to the newest version at the DirectX Website http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx
5.
Disable unnecessary software (Realplayer tray icon, Winamp tray, etc...). Disable Antivirus and Firewalls before copy.
Spyware and Adware - some programs can install other software that can be damaging to your Operating System. Please scan for these programs with a Spyware utility. We recommend Ad-Aware, available freely at www.lavasoftusa.com
6.
You may also need to run the Drive Select. You can run the drive select by going into the Program Files then into 321 Studios and then you'll see the Drive Select and double click on it, that will run it for you and it should read your re-writer correctly then.
7.
Also if you are running XP ensure that there is nothing running in the backround. Task Manager won't always address all active programs, and there is a faster way to do the same thing.
Go to start, and then to run, and type in MSConfig. Then, select the Startup tab at the top, and go to "disable all". Say ok to the message you receive and it will restart you. Say yes to the next message (which will just mean "you have altered something, is that ok?") and then you will not have any programs active by default.
If you are still experiencing difficulties, please do not hesitate to contact me again.
