Hey Everyone~

I've soldered before with computers and other electonics but i've never attempted to install a modchip before. I get the impression that the DUO chip is pretty sweet? I was going to order it from http://www.foundmy.com/ Is the DUO a good chip? Also, I was wondering where and how should I place the chip on my V4 mobo. Pics would be great, or just directions on how to place it. I don't want to just let it sit wherever on the mobo after i solder all the wires. I've heard of people taping it and doing some other stuff, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thx,

Foundmy is a great reseller. The DUO is an excellent choice for your V4 as long as the laser is in good shape, other wise you will surely have problems. I have a link on my page that you can get to by clicking the link in my sig that explains a little test you can do to see if your laser is in OK shape. Also while your there you can look at the install pictures I have for a good location for your chip. There are many places you can locate it, do a search and you will find more.

Thanks for the info and the pic on your website spedmetal. my laser is in great shape, loads all games right away. question: I see everyone seems to use hot glue to hold the wires to the mobo as well as on top of chips. is this really safe to do? also, as far as attaching the DUO to the mobo, what should i use?? anyone? hotglue?, doublesided tape?, what? one last question. how do the experienced members here solder the wires? in that, i mean, do you press the tip of the iron onto the point and then touch the solder? or get some on the iron first and then touch to the point. This is my first ps2 modding and i don't wanna mess it up. i'm not sure how sensitive the mobo is, i know not to touch it for more than 1-2 secs at a time...as for method, i'm just hoping some people suggest good ways to do it. I know i'm a noob at this and most people will just read and not reply, but please, we all had to start from scratch at one point. please, any hints and suggestions are appreciated.

thx again,

For holding down the wires, regular old hot glue is safe. However it is a good idea to keep the glue off any chips on the mobo as the glue can actually work as an insulator and possibly cause the chip on the mobo to over heat. As for how to hold the DUO down to the mobo, the chip will come with double sided tape on the back of it already, so you’re set there.

As for the different soldering methods, the best advice I can give you is to not learn how to solder on the PS2. Find and old CD player, phone, or whatever that has small points like that of the PS2's mobo and practice A LOT. I could tell you over and over again the different ways to solder but until you have actually tried it; it wont really matter.

Do a search and you will find many good posts on different methods, but if your to lazy to do a search on your own here is a thread that has some good advice.
