Hi I have a version 1. I read on the internet about the class action lawsuit sony got nailed on. I called up sony and they fixed my ps2 ver 1 for free about 6 months ago. I'm sure sony didn't like it but they HAD to according to the results of the class action lawsuit. I was very suprised when they said it would be free. They said they replaced the laser and put in a new tray assembly and cleaned the dust out-like you would detail a car! I use swap magic and a slide card. I get about 90 percent success rate. Which is good enough for me. They do load slow when you boot the game but after that it's just like a normal game.

Please, not everybody has the bucks to put in a mod chip. Or wants to put in the effort of finding a chip, mailing out the ps2, paying for it, and then hoping they will actually give your ps2 back and if it will even work after they are done. Other than that nice to meet you Tyler:)
he cheryl could u pm me with the www i can peek at the law suite.....kinda makes me want to take care of this thing for free...why not the price of gas nowadays and money saved is great...

Cheryl,
A Magic V 50K chip is cheaper than the swap method. I tried both. It wasn't until this site taught me a million things that I realized the Mod was the way to go. The install will run around $50 depending on who you use. Try www.norcalmods.com ! I too was nervous of sending my machine coast to coast to a stranger. I almost feel like friend when I read his posts now. Try it, you'll love it.

The entire first half of your post is basically the definition of ghetto.
If you notice we have a very nice list of installers that will install your chip Very cheap. If you look they have very good ratings by other members of this board that have sent them their own ps2's.
Basically your saving yourself time and effort in the long run by getting a modchip now. The first thing game companies do is make a game that the "Ghetto Magic" discs cant play.
Nice to meet you to cheryl. ;) Maybe someday youll figure out that Im helping people out here for their own benifit.

First off I have a version 1 ps2. Nobody but nobody wants to touch those things for an install of a modchip. You have to figure everything into the cost. Even with the cheapest modchip you have to pay for shipping the chip and ps2 out to have it installed and the installation. I seriously doubt many people can put in a modchip on their own without ruining the machine. All sorts of people like to say I put a modchip in on forums like this but how often do you hear someone actually admitting they fried their ps2 because they didn't know what they are doing? Also let's not forget about the people out there that send off their money only to get nothing back or their money was mysteriously lost in the mail. I doubt many will admit to being ripped off. None the less this still happens. And as far as that goes I doubt most people even know that you can burn backup games and play them on a console. But hey what do I know I'm just a newbie and yes I am poor. I have alot more respect for people who actually defend their argument and give facts than just lol at newbies. I think the ability to take a piece of junk and change it into some other useful tool is our greatest asset. Remember apollo13?

Cheryl my dear, if our lives depended on a piece of antique equipment then by all means fix it. But when we have the ability to sell a ps2 on ebay (being careful not to mention that its a v1) for very close to the same price as a new one, I must say thats the way to go.
If we all used our minds a bit more and looked further towards the future maybe not as much of us would be, as you call it "poor".
Another thing, I in no way "lol'ed" at the fact that you were a newbie. I know better than that.
If more people follow the good adviced that has been building up in these forums there would be less and less problems as well.
I will also say this to you cheryl please dont think Im trying to offend you in any way. I just know better. Ive been doing this for many years and Ive seen things come and go. It would be in your best interest to at least hear me out. I also in no way make any profit via these forums. I do it because I enjoy helping and replying to interesting threads such as this. ;)

Ya know what Tyler. You're allright. Puttin up with us newbies that ask all sorts of questions. My niece and nephew finally talked some sense into me and I'll be gettin a mod chip hopefully sooner than later. I'll probably sell off the antique ver 1. I must say though I got mine on first day issue and seemed to hold up better than others. I have heard plenty of horror stories about the first few versions frying really quick. And thanks to your posts Tyler at least I will be dealing with the more reputable businesses when I do get a chip installed. :)
