View Full Version : Lets see everyones modchip installs !!!
You might have seen a thread like this in a few other console forums, so i thought it would be nice to start one here. This is where you post your installations for everyone to see, comment and learn from !
Ill get the ball rolling :) Here is a v7 with a Latin chip ( mars clones )

Why dont you use the Pins instead of the vias ?
spedmetal
27-03-2004, 11:31
Why? Just cuz, no real reason, I have done both, its a little quicker for me to do the via's and I actually think you get a stronger bond to the vias. Just personal preference I guess.

is it easier?
spedmetal

Both ways are about the same level of difficulty, the chip legs take more time to master though.

kool
i gotta get some practice buy some broken or sencond hand ps2 and mod em :)
Spedmetal once you get the hang of soldering to the CDX pins it gets real easy.. i used to struggle with it , now i just angle my eyes so im looking sideways at the pins.. wires go on easy... a bit of a pain in the pass to have to scrap the vias. But i havent noticed any difference in modchip performance wether you solder ot vias or pins.

Saw how popular this was on Newz and ownz hey Netmech?? :D
Unless Z has killed the thread it was the best non-sticky he had going... shame to provide him with such a useful thread - to bad one can't kill a thread one started after 14 days on ownz! ;)
By the way the vias are so much quicker than the legs on a couple of conditions:
1) - that the vias are not overly covered in conformal coating - some times you get station that are so thickly covered that it takes to long to scrape - these I use the chip legs for, some stations how ever almost have the copper 100% exposed, on these I use the vias...
2) Obviously you need to be able to solder to vias - but typically if you can't solder to vias well then you also probably could not solder to the chip legs safely...
See here for some install examples of my own - mine are going more for reliability and short wire lengths than to win awards for being pretty... but that does not mean I don't admire the work of others like Kiezer Sozei

The 'Y' point on the Duo2 is actually just another ground. Why they suggest soldering it to the chip leg on the bios in the installation diagram I don’t know. It would be much easier to just take it to the ground plan, or even jumper it to the ground on the mod chip its self. I noticed this after I soldered the wire and decided to just leave it. Next time I'll take it to the ground plan.
Pretty nice chip over all.

Did you not read my review from 2 months ago - http://fileforums.com/showthread.php?t=61058&highlight=duo2+shadow
The Y point is just being used as a model select - they attempted to cleverly disguise this fact - possibly to hide which code they were using in the chips (if the rumour about it being ICE code is correct...)
Either way I have been tying it to ground from my first install onwards. - V10
http://www.cyber-mag.com/station/installs/V10_Duo2_full.jpg
I suggested to them to use link-able pads on the chip to save on having to wire the Y point to ground...
End result - The Duo2 chips I have don't use the Y point anymore. - V9

just noticed we used the same alt Voltage location on the V9 ;)
Multimeters make handy tools!
Just a note - you can get ground from the other side of that row of three resistors - i.e. one side has 3.45V the other is ground... but your point allows for a straight wire connection without the slight bend mine has :p

Hey shadow, do you have a problem getting the chip to disable with the V9, holding reset until the sony screen turns the unit off.
guess they should say hold for 5 seconds on the v9
Never really tried to tell the truth but if they do have the disable set to hold for 5 seconds then on the V9 even that will shut the station off again - I suggest soldering the rst line to the eject point instead like the magic etc do in the V9 and V10!
nice installs SK - btw is it hard to solder to the that cpu thing with very thin legs?
SP - according to the website disable mode is:-
Disable Mode
- Hold the RESET button until the "blue clouds" comes up on the TV.
ShadowKnyght
12-07-2004, 03:29
yes it is reasonally hard - but practice makes... well a little less bloody hard - takes a long time - I recomend only soldering to every second leg and using the vias to complete the rest leaves more room on both to work.
Still not sure if holding the button that long wont still turn the V9's off again - will try next install.
holding the reset button for like 5 secs will cause v9 machines to switch off.
maybe that is the reason why they change the operating instructions?
spedmetal
12-07-2004, 07:32
Ok I can clear this up from experience. If you hold reset until the clouds with the duo2 on a V9 it will shut the machine off. It you hold it until just before the cloud (5 seconds, or black screen still) it will disable the chip.

So, this is my first modchip install ever. its a matrix infinity in a v7. I wanted to do it, but my dad wouldnt let me, because he said, that if it went wrong, at least he would have done it. He did the ground, then the y, then he tried the sx, but thats the hardest one, and he dropped a bit of tin, and stuff was connected that shouldnt be connected. then he went do something else for a sec, and i asked him if i could do the reset, cuz thats an easy one, and he said i could, cuz i know the risks. then i did the reset, and all the other wires too ^^
well, we cleaned the sx part enough, but on the chip next to it is still some tin connecting some legs. Theres also some tin at the place where the M is supposed to go, i messed up there :P
so, my dad will take it to where he works, cuz they got a 'vacuumcleaner' (litterally translated, dunno what it is in english) for soldering there.
I did it after spedmetal's matrix in his v7, so you can prolly see some similarities. If u can see anything that's wrong, please tell me :)
here are the pics:
http://www.gengvv.nl/DutchDemon/PS2/full.jpg
http://www.gengvv.nl/DutchDemon/PS2/diagonal.jpg
Edit: the chip is upgradable, right? do i need to upgrade it or something? what is the use, and how do i do it?
also, i think i broke a tiny bit of the corner off of the thing next to the thing where you attach the sx to. I guess noone could follow that.
ok, if you look here (ftp://ftp.divineo.net/pub/Console/PLAYSTATION%202/Matrix%20Infinity/PAL-V7%5B1%5D.jpg), then below the point where scex is attached is a little yellow thing. i broke a tiny bit off of that.... is that a big problem? thanks
DutchDemon
24-10-2004, 22:22
do you guys think it's safe to just try it with the corner broken off? or should i try to replace it (seems very hard...)
edit: if noone knows (if i dont get a response or something), then ill just assemble my ps2 in about 5 hours from now.. (the time that i editted) but im not sure if it will cause any harm..
edit: ive made a new tread for this.. i hope you guys will excuse me for that

Well I applaud Sean for doin his own installs. He's still learnin so let him keep going. At least his installs are currently running too. Im sure eventually his wires will loose their length.
As for the tape making static electricity, I highly doubt that. I mean it is electrical tape. The plastic on the rest of the board probably conducts more static than the tape itself.

I fink everyones first few installs look like "a snakes wedding". Once u have confidence that yr installs do work ok then u suddenly get the urge to better them and thats when shorter wires and tidiness come in.
However, as mentioned b4....if it works its an ok install!
Do beware of emc trouble though with signal wires overlapping so much circuitry. I'm sure everyone remembers v5 problems with the m2 clock wire (wot a nitemare!!) No matter how short an how well bonded to groundplane I always ended up having to do a twisted pair.
Anyway, i waffel on. Well done seaney. U already above about 70% of installers by actually havin it work great after install. :D

These pics show the first attempt where I learnt (the hard way) about ground bounce and cross talk!
This nasty looking install resulted in a black screen till I re-routed and shortened the wires and replaced the 30awg ground and power wires with something a bit thicker...
Up till this point I had only ever installed about ten 8 wire PSX chips!

Nice job - you've certainly come a long way since that first install :D
Would you believe the first install was for a paying customer!!!???
I'm going after Sped's mantra of the shortest wire and the neatest install! Its great to post ur work cos otherwise, who's ever gonna see it? (apart from my first cutomer that is!) :p

very good install!!but 8 diodes doesn't protect the coils...it better use 4 zener or 6 diode....
I use the Crystal fix cos its nice and simple to install. Is this enuf protection or do I still risk burnout?
I tried the Neofix II once but it stopped the PS2 from powering up! Looks dodgy too...
The best fix is use 4 diode zener...

blah.... no one knows what the best fix is. I have installed over 50 of these and not had a single issue. All the fixes out there are experimental and all seem to have been fairly successful. We might be installing the comsoft or the subzero (new summone fix) fix soon.

I know that 8 diode doesn't protect the coils (1.2volt is too big)...and the K point (the point that is controlled by the pic) doesn't do his work on every "block"....
aaahh, i use a 100k // with the 105 resistor (1Mohm) near the Z point

No need to apologize, I understand you loud and clear and I'm sure you understand my points too.
Keeping my ear close to the ground on the Summone fix. I've read just about every post and there are so many contradicting comments.
For the whole part, it's nice and simple to install and so far looks to have a great success rate. Gonna try it on a v12 of a good friend so I can monitor. :)

I get a lot of gap v4's for some reason. (including my own but with a new laser of course) Lasers are only just hanging on in some of them but they go ok with a bit of tweaking... Always gotta let them know they'll be up for a A$70 laser soonish tho.
Here's a cheapmod Duo2se in a v4. Great chip! Bulletproof. :)
THis is also my official entry into the worlds shortest (complete mod) wire competition! Damn those eject lines...ur lettin the team down!

DMS4 Pro in a V12 with the Comsoft V4 fix. This fix is swwweeettt!!! It has a flashing LED to let you know that its monitoring the laser which can be seen through the fron grill. Not only does it look cool but is serves a purpose. I'm now stocking these fixes and they will be added to the site soon.

Ah another Ozzie on the scene! ;)
Let me know how you go - take note of whether you have a wide laser SPU3170 G or a narrow laser PVR802 as the fix seems to have killed at least two wide lasers by making one coil go open...
Example of the fix using SMT resistors with wide lens - worked for weeks until one of the coils went open - possibly manufacturing fault, bad luck or use of GTA:SA by customer

Do what I do... Use the pics of the pro installs as a guide to improving your own installs. The more U do, the better you get. ;) Its great to show off your stuff on the forums. :)
ive gone and modded mine now, and it works like a nut. NO WAY Am i THINKING about taking that thing apart again :p. oh man, modded PS2's rock SO MUCH. I've been sessioning Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2, MGS3, everything man. and the fact that it does all DVD's and PS1 coipies is the icing on the cake.
bustin nuts dudes. a few of my friends have asked me to do theirs, now theyve got wind that i can do it. this time im going to use flux and all that stuff. i would mind if i f**ked my own up..(actualy, i would, id be pi$$ed, and i really wouldnt care about other peoples :p ) but with other people its just not right.
i HAD actually screwed mine up, i bridged 2 pins on the BIOS chip. took my 3 days of picking and pinning razorblading, eventually i wedged it out, and multimeter read high resistance.
/rant. sorry about that, i got carried away. if my friends' mods of mine are successful, i'll overcome my shyness and post it. actually im not shy at all, i dont give a shiz, i just dont have a digi cam :p

Every once is a while a v1,v2,v3 will come along that hasnt been used to much and will still have a good laser. However the majority of the time when these old versions show up, I like you also see worn out lasers in them and they need replacing.
As for a good source for lasers Rich from www.richspsxparts.com is an A1 place for that. He is in the USA but I believe he ships world wide. Contact him he will set you up.
