I've got a no-solder chip and swap magic and am sick or stuff not working and the hassel, but mainly certain games not working (eg Champions of Norrath, oh so good, I'm not risking it getting damaged) and so I decided it's time for a real modchip. I've been checking out the available modchips and have decided that DMS3 is a lot of money for things I don't need and that Messiah 2 and Magic V are basically the same thing, except that Magic V is less expensive (and I haven't really even found many places carrying Messiah 2). I have come down to a toss up between 2 chips: the Magic V and the the Smartchip. Would anybody be able to make suggestions? I have a V7 ps2 and so if there's any known problems with either chip's compatibility, please let me know. I've found Smartchip to be less expensive, but I'm wondering why? What makes each chip better or worse? What are the limitations of each? (dvd9 backups, ability to turn off when playing originals online, that sorta stuff) Also, where can I get either one of these installed for a good price, and sent back to Canada? And do you know if any of these places would want to keep my no-solder and Swap Magic discs as a sort of trade-in? Thanks guys.
I had the Magic V installed a few months ago and it boots everything. No trouble with Splinter Cell or Freedom Fighters. I also have a v7 ps2. I got it from www.modchip.ca It was $65 Cad. and that included express delivery(24hrs). I don't know anything about the smartchip.
u could also check out the duo chips there only $20 shiped and work on v7s and i belive is 18 wires to solder and on ur Champions of Norrath is it origianl or copy cause looks like the origianl would work fine on a v7

I got magic v v7 ps2 the best. Got 123 backups all work :D :D LOOK at www.newagepsx.com that might help you.
Smartchip is excellent for booting dvd-r games.. it sucks for cd-r rips... The smartchip also removes the ps2 logo when a game boots. I would get a magic V.

ive seen millions ur just looking in the wrong place. Magic 3.1 is really out of date and i would use one. Personaly i have a duo and had no problems.
I haven't had any problems with my Magic 3.1 and its cheap :) (if it isnt broken dont fix it)
I haven't seen actual DUOS in the US, like with my own eyes, not online for sale.
By the way, ... your xbox samsung drive, is it a 616t?

www.modchip.cc
yea u gotta point there from my own sig! i would prefer to have the duo than the magic as duo is more relliable.
That domain is for sale :)
How can it be more reliable, if neither has problems?
You just don't want to admit mine was a better value :)
Are DUOS popular in the states? I seriously haven't seen one or heard from anyone owning one.

opps soz http://www.modchips.cc/
yea they are popular arnt they tyler, sped comeone back me up.
i personally love it. I think if dms3 and m2 wearnt there DUO and apple pro or 3 will be flying high at the top! :)
I'll agree on one thing, its priced well. Less wires to solder too. Hmmm ... I guess DUO is a good chip, but I think I'll stick with my magic 3.1 :)
Is that a good site buy chips from? I think I might actual try out a DUO.

I just want to say thanks to everybody for their advice. I think I'll be going with the Magic V, it seems very well liked and very dependable. My only problem is that I don't trust myself to solder it correctly so I'll be sending it away I guess. If anybody knows a good, reliable place to install that will send to Canada let me know please. I found a place that did all of North America last night but forget the name and I don't keep a history for parranoid reasons. I'll find one easily enough, but if anybody has good suggestions they'd be appreciated. Also, someone asked about Champions of Norrath. I have the original, but want to back it up. But from what I've gathered, Magic V will play dvd9 backups so there shouldn't be a problem. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks again guys.
You are correct is plays DVD9s, ... but you'll need to back up the game onto two dvds. (splitting the game)
