View Full Version : V7 laser in V1
First off I would like to say hello to everyone. I have been gone awhile, busy with work and family, and kind of lost track of the scene. Seems like there is alot to get caught up on.
I am working off memory here so I could be wrong, but if memory serves I had read that newer version PS2 lasers, V5 and up, did not work in the earlier PS2s with crapped out laser.
My brothers V1 finally stopped reading DVD after about a year. Switched his with a new on that I thought was goodand nothing. Tried azimuth and pot adjustment and could not get it to read dvd. Finally removed the chip to see if that was the problem and no difference.
So finally said F it I'll try a V7 laser and low and behold reads dvd like a champ now. So was I wrong in thinking newer lasers don't work in old PS2s or is this a one in a million?
wow u got a v7 laser to work in a v1 ? ive always heard that new laser wouldnt work in old systems
Also what I had always thought. If I had known it would work I would have given him a new laser a year ago because I knew this day would come. Now I have to re-install his chip for no reason.
all the peps that i sold laser to i could had sold them a v7 for there old units i lost a few customers thinking the laser would not had worked :( but now i know that it will work :) maybe we need to let the other sites know this cause i see post about lasers all the time.

400c lasers works on the older machines as far as I know.
but it will not work on machines that uses the "r" type lasers unless u do a mod.

I don’t have an R type but what is the MOD about to make them compatible? Why haven’t I heard of this before!!!!!?????? Are V9’s C’ type lasers too?
Just for everyones reference pics of the laser I used here (http://home.nycap.rr.com/headly/images/laser.jpg)

I think the only models that use R lasers are those with the R in the model number. The definative way to tell would be to look at the back of the laser. In my pic here (http://home.nycap.rr.com/headly/images/laser.jpg) in between the laser pots you can see "400C" the R type laser i am guessing would have a number followed by R.
I think the mod to make an R type work in another console would be difficult because if I remember right they used a different cable.

Nope its a pretty easy mod. The ribbon cables are all the same. Check out this link.

That is a very easy mod. Basically crushes the old myth that newer laser will not work in old PS2s.
Do you know of any links for this mod for V1-V3 motherboards?

I dont believe you need to mod the v1-v3's because they never used the 'R' type lasers.

There’s some C types for sale on ebay for $44 from a place here in Canada, that’s the best price I’ve seen yet, most people try and sell these for $70 US or more. The info even says V1-8! I’m going to buy one and I’ll let you guys know how good it works. I’ve got a V4 here that barely reads original DVD’s now.
Hey, it looks like V9's use R type lasers too? I know they don’t seem to work too good!

if you do use a "c" laser in a "r" machine. there is one problem though, u can't set any of the options in ur ps2 anymore, ie language, time etc.

Hmm, that’s weird. What would happen if you added a second resistor to the board instead of just swapping the position of the one resistor? It could short something out though. Can this resister swap also be done on a C type board to make it R type? I’ll have a little look at this area next time I have a machine opened, This info might come in handy some day. I don’t think I’ve ever had an “R” Machine here (except V9’s R’ compatible?)

since your talking sbout lasers, my neighbor has a ver5 which i dont if its the laser or whole drive. After hitting the eject button it takes forever to eject. (5 secs after pushing). Same for going back in. And it also seems to struggle to read any disc inserted. Takes several triesto get a game to load. So is it the laser or while drive needing to be replaced? thanks
