I'm curious, if this is possible. Let's say i have 3-4 PS2s with network adapters. Is it possible to hook them together and let's say play games like THUG, SOCOM, etc, just like being online?

If yes, does it require a PC, or they can be connected all by themselves?

Thank you

You don't need 4 PCs, you need ONE to start the LAN connection and then you would need a hub/router type of device.

has anybody actually tried this?

cause i don not see how it could happen.

For starters all the online games require server authentication, so therefore lan is not possible.

Even if you are running a router and all 4 ps2s can access the servers there is only one ip address. Once a server sees a second attempt to login with an ip address in theory it'll give u an error and wont let u log in.

I could b wrong, my theory is based on a normal ip practices.
If somebody can prove me wrong I'd like to know how it's done.

Well, I had order a PS2 adapter since 12-2, never received, it was sent again and NOT yet received! So, i haven't made any tests yet, but it seems logical to me like this.

Hook 3-4 PS2 on ONE PC, so you have a LAN with 4 PS2 and one PC. Each PS2 and the PC has its own IP.

So, for instance in THUG (it's the only game that i have that has online gaming) you boot thug in all PS2 and you make one PS2 running a server game and the other 3 act as "clients". Since you know which IP the server runs, each client PS2 tries to connect to the server PS2.

Your setup will works fine for lan gaming, Socom 2 and midnight club II also support lan gaming,
also I think you can play with this setup online (on sony servers), because as you said, when you run internet connection sharing (ICS) on your PC, It give each PS2 a unique private IP (192.168.0.xxx) and online servers see this IP.
I have 3 PC running ICS and each one has msn messenger with different ID,they login at the same time with no problem.

You would need a good broadband connection, and a router to plug all those ps2s in. That should work fine.

khafan => online servers can't c a local ip

SurfDrifter => the online games aren't served on your ps2, they r served by Sony, but r created by u

remember too that most of these games utilize dnas authentication so using backed up games wont work anyway

also take into account that sony marketed the ps2 & network adaptor as being able to play games online. At no point in their advertising was anything mentioned about a local area network ability. Also read the games manuals, If a game could do it they'd tell u how in the manual. I work in a business that retails ps2 and even in the retailer network adaptor sales kits this wasn't mentioned.

Once again, all my own opinion

For lan gaming you don't need internet connection and there's no dnas authentication for it.
Socom 2 & midnight club II & THUG are 3 games that I know for sure that support lan gaming and I saw it in action, they used sony network adaptors and a switch/hub and a PC for running the network.

Yes for lan gaming u dont need an internet connection, that's right.

After checking the manual for Midnight Club 2, i admit i was wrong, MC2 does support a lan.

THUG doesn't mention it anyway so this game I still have my doubts. If you've seen it going then it must be using localized versions or something.

Socom II no idea on yet since it's not released in oz.

I still believe that unless a game has the option for lan (eg MC2) that it can't b done.

Once again all my own opinions, if anybody has steps on how to step one up I'm all ears on how it's done.

He didn't say either that he was playing back up games. So i assume they all have that game. DNAS checks the Disc ID and Model ID so it might work on the internet. As he's using 3-4 different original Disk ID's and 3-4 Different Model ID's.

The lan option for Socom2 is located at main menu and for THUG, goto "THUG online play", after testing network you choose your character and then you can choose your connection type (Internet or LAN ), then you can host or join game on local network.
