Search google there should be some good instructions out for making adjustments.
You should have a multi-tester (preferably digital) to test the Ohms on the 2 pins on top of each Pot. Record the original settings, adjust to (around 800 for V1-4) 900-1000 should be good for a V7.
You’ll have the drive cover and tray out to clean the laser and adjust the white gear, so the easiest way
To get at the Pot’s is to remove the screw holding the sled pin on the right of the laser sled, then you can pull the laser out and flip it over being careful of the ribbon and lens, you don’t need to disconnect it.
I can usually get a bad PS2 reading DVD’s in less than 5 minutes.
Im Trying to adjust the laser to see if it will help any.

That’s a very good site. I thought of a couple things to add after looking at that site. When I adjust the white gear, I fine tune it with a DVD RUNNING in the drive. With the drive cover and tray removed just place in a DVD, pop out the white hub from the drive cover and drop it in the DVD. Also I never adjust below 750 Ohms on V4’s and 850 Ohms on V7’s.
The picture of the white gear shows a laser ribbon under it with quite a bit of wear from sliding against a steel shield edge just under the white gear. Yet another one of Sony’s numerous and mind boggling design flaws! When I see wear on a ribbon like this I cut a strip of packing tape to the same width of the ribbon and cover the ribbon with it for a little extra protection.
