im looking at all the install diagrams and the magic v looks pretty straight forward. some tight spots, but all the spots are on the same side of the board. i got a local guy who repairs cell phones (very good at soldering) i got the ps2main board out and right in front of me on the desk now, any reason NOT to order the magic? anything i may need to know about them b4 i do?

I personally do not like the magic chips.
I think they are out dated.
But some people like them...
On a v7 i would get a duo.
Up to you.

I think Andy-C is referring to the old lines of Magic chips. The Magic V has really turned Magic around, and I now rate them as one of the best chips, right up there with Messiah. I don't see any problems with ordering the Magic V chip - go for it. Spedmetal installs them, so it might be worth having a word with him to find out some more information about what they are like...

hey,

i think the duo is a better mod than messiah 2. i say go for the duo, smartchip or even the messiah if you wanna spend loads. i have heard good stuff about the new magic chip.

I think he is talking about the magic V Sean.... I may be wrong, and yes lufcfan is right the magic team’s new line of magic V chips has really turned them around. If you’re looking for a cheap alternative to the messiah or the DMS3 in your V9 or V10 go with the magic V other wise if you have a V5-V7 go for the Apple Pro or the Duo if you’re doing it yourself only because it has fewer wires to install. I say V5-V7 because the V4 and earlier PS2's have tiered lasers most of the time and you wont be able to read DVD-R's and buying a new PS2 just makes more sense then buying a new laser or even adjusting it some times. But like I always say, it’s totally up to you in the end. Good luck!

It’s a chip that I added on to the messiah 2 pro that allows you to play mod protected PS1 games. Its not a really big deal as most people don’t play PS1 games any more but there are a few games that came out as the PS1 was on its way out that where able to tell if you had a mod chip in your PS1 and wouldn’t let you play them. That’s when you started seeing the PS1 stealth mod chips. When the PS2 chips started coming out this mod protection was over looked and never incorporated into the PS1 side of the PS2 chips. The chip that I added onto it will allow you to play these games. Up until the release of the DMS3 V9 last month and the MLX2 a few weeks ago, no chip manufacture has incorporated the PS1 stealth into there chip design. The Messiah team is claiming to be incorporating this into there next chip release, but who knows what has even happened to them. Haven’t heard a word from them or charlie_ps2. In fact there webpage is down ( ww.messiah2.com ) unless they have other one up some place that I don’t know of. But like I said this chip is really no big deal as not many people even play PS1 games anymore (I mainly us it for spyro 3) ,also most of the mod protected games had patches that you could just apply to them to get around it. Spyro 3 had a patch but it didnt work to good because a little ways into the game a fairy would tell you that you had a hacked version and you could never really finish the game because you would loose egg and what not. There where a few other game that never had patches either. Here is a list of the PS1 mod protected games.
