Hey,
i just got hold of a ps2 form my mate for 5 pounds.
bad thing is the laser dont work i think:
Ok i opend the console up.
It makes a funny noise when it boots and the disk spins.
it boots to the menu
it will show up on the menu for audio cd and it will play like 20 sec of the first song and the laser will make a clicking noise after the 20 secs and during playing
dvds wont play says unable to read disk
and games go to the rsod
so i think the ps2 laser has gone the console is a 30003 r which is v 5 caus theere are 3 ribbon cables not those plug things which v4s have.
if so who can fit me a new laser

help whats wrong with it when it boots it makes a crunching sound too
sound like its coming from the dvd drive?
Definately sounds like the laser to me.
if its like the PS1 and PSX then you could try re aligning it. on the laser assembly itself you sould find some small pot's that can be adjusted, maybe one on the ribbon similar to the PSX units. Give it a go as you have nothing to loose. just be careful when turning these pots, light finger presure is all thats required. just twist about 1/8th of a turn and try to re boot, if it seems to get worse then turn the pot back in the oposite direction, repeat the process. If all goes well then you should find a position where the laser will read quite happily for a while. this is not a longterm fix but will save a few quid on a new laser for a few months. (And theres nothing like buying something cheap off a mate, fixing it for no cost and then rubbing their nose in it.)

Try playing it in a Vertical position, and clean all the back were the dust gets in.... Thats what kills a laser (most of the time) the dust!
