I have a magic v mod chip. In a ver 7 ps2, it will run backup ps1 games, backup dvd,s and original ps1/ ps2 /dvd Disks. I cannot run any ps2 cd-r or DVD+R Backups. It appears to load the game but freezes just before the PS2 logo. DVD was backed up with record now max and cd-r was backed up with clone cd. Any suggestions as to why I can’t get the ps2 backups to play?

I have used Riteks, Verbatim, Maxell and Imation Disks, None of which will play. I am getting quite the stack of coasters.

Never through away coasters. You may be burning them fine but maybe there is something wrong with your laser or setup.

I am starting to question the setup. However it plays every thing except PS2 backups.
Are there some games that simply cannot be backed up?

What kind of DVD hardware are you using?
What games are you trying to back up?

All games can be backed up. Sounds like a faulty chip or bad install.

I have double-checked all solder connections under a microscope, so I suspect it’s a faulty chip. Has anyone ever herd of a bad chip that plays everything except ps2 cd-r & DVD+R backups?

DVD Burner is Mitsumi DVD+r-wr/cd-r=rw

Games I tried to backup
DVD GTA Vice City
cd-r Dynasty Warriors 2

Have you tried dvd-r media to see if that will play in it? I have read some posts about using -r instead of +r.
Make sure -r media is compatible with your dvd burner or that wont work either.
I dunno that much about Magic mods chips but maybe the chip has been installed incorrectly or it is just a bad chip all together as Bighap mentioned.
I use a DUO chip myself and No probs, here.. That chip is just plain Awesome. It plays everything I have tried so far.

I suggest you burn your Backup on DVD-R. Most probably us PS2 is not reading the DVD+R properly, ad most old PS2 versions are not 100% DVD+r compatible. DVD-R is more compatbile than DVD+R media. SO i suggest try using DVD-R and then let us know what happend....

My Burner will not burn –r and I cannot play Ps2 cd-r backups either.

Do you have anyone around that has a modded ps2 so you can check your backups on their machine?

If you have double checked all connections, and are using the proper wire, I would say its a faulty chip...

Get yourself another one. Sounds like at least "part" of the chip is working since it will boot ps1 backups.

Thanks everyone for all your help. I think I am going to try to exchange this chip or as some of you suggested look into the DUO chip.
Have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

DUO chips are going for about $19 with free shipping. You can check with TylerDurden on the site info, but if memory serves correctly, it was modchips.cc or something like that. You can double check with him on this to see if I have it right. You may also find the link in the Ultimate Newbie Guide.;) Merry Christmas

Since everyone was so helpful I thought I would enlighten you with an update.
As BG suggested I also suspect that the magic v chip I installed is defective. However to exchange it I have to pay the shipping and the supplier wants an additional $15.00 to test the chip before they will replace it. I don’t think I should post my thoughts on that one! (fear of getting banned) I decided as Many suggested to purchase the Duo chip from modchips.cc as it will probably be cheaper in the long run.
