Ive asked this before but have had no answers so here we go:

all my burns make sort of squeeking sounds when loading (sometimes more or less depending on the media and burn speed). not loud though. if i put my ear real close to the ps2 i can hear it. It sounds like when the ps2 loads cd based games but only about 1 quarter as loud and vicious. the originals all sound quiet with a bit of soft squeeking and make deep clicking-like sounds (well not really clicks but loading-like sounds). is this somewhat normal or should my burns sound exactly the same as the originals? how do ur burns sound???

When I use backups in my V4R w/Messiah, they sound just the same as my originals do - if not quieter! I use Ritek DVD-R and have just bought some new Verbatim so I'll try these when I backup a couple of the new games I just got this week.

That squeaking is the lens focusing. Should be absent on originals, less pronounced if at all audible on good media and noticeable on cheap media.

I shall post something and sticky it here about media behaviour.

Top advice. I used to find all sorts of wierd loading sounds on my first ps2 when using any dvd-r I could get my hands on (Bulkpaq mostly, YUK!!!!). People seem to be so hung up on "Well, i just backed up Manhunt onto a 5p a dvd-r media brand an it works fine" kind of attitude. It doesn't matter if it works or not, its how much damage ur doin to ur ps2 and loading noise like that equals stressed components/laser etc. U find that it loads them fine for a while.............Verbs are okay but not as dark as ritek based media. Traxdata, dvdmaster, ritek are all good makes. Yep, they ain't as cheap as others put will prolong yr ps2 life. I use 4X traxdata, burn at 4X an they no noisier than the originals at loading an this is on my old v5.

thanks for the help guys. ive done some more testing and found that most my burns are close to the originals but are a little bit louder when heavily loading eg. GTA VC. i think this is a good way to see how good a burn really is. ive tested out some taiyo yuden dvd-r and they seem just as good if not better than the maxell manufactured TDK's. i think i'll stick to these since i cant find any ritek here in australia.

Hey mate, where did you get your taiyo yiden?? I got it from ebay and it's costing me $75 Aud for 45 pieces (2x). Are those you got 4x dvd-r with silver top?

You could get some ritek at http://www.jpldisplays.com.au/oscommerce/catalog/

they r sold as TDK 4x DVD-R. u can get them at dik Smith Electronics. they are TY but sold as TDK. they r expensive though, 4.80 for 1 !!! i would stick to what u got unless u must burn at 4x. anyway, if all of u dont know already, there is a program called DVD Identifier that can read who actually makes ur discs. otto said to use traxdata, ritek, dvdmaster but they are all probably made by ritek, which is good. rarely will the brand name be the actual manufacturer of the disc.

thanks for all the help guys, and thanks for that link jackng.

edit: lol, The **** in DSE got edited lol.

I have a V4, it’s the 35001 which I find is slightly better than the other V4’s ( I know what your going to say...GT but from what I've seen these drives are better). I got this for next to nothing and brought the laser back to life. I noticed some squeeking or chirping on CD-R’s rinning PS2 backups even Verbatims, CD-R’s and origional CD media are very noisy. Running PS1 backups are much more quiet. For DVD-R’s I’ve only had access to cheap princo 1X media. DVD media is a lot quieter than CD’s on my PS2, they do make a little clunking sound and I couldn’t tell any difference between my original DVD or the DVD-R. I couldn’t resist trying to burn a 1X at 2X so I did and I couldn’t tell any difference with that DVD-R either. Now, just because you can’t tell any difference in sound doesn’t mean that there is no difference. It’s still a good idea to listen to your laser and compare with originals

I just had an idea to compare loading time with a stopwatch. Surprising results here, the 1X princo DVD-R I burned at 2X loaded 29.39 seconds. The original DVD game loaded the identical game section in 30.69!

wrong. PS2 DVD's are much much better than any burn any person can ever do. believe me.

I personally have only ever heard that sort of sound when booting DVDrs.

No PSX or PS2 CDR game has ever made a station I modded make that sound.

The funny/strange thing is I actually listen for these sort of sounds as an indication of whether the disk has been recognised correctly and the install is correct.

I have got to the stage with the PS2 that I could have the TV off and I could tell if a chip worked just from the sound of the laser!

The V9 is to quiet for this though.

The PSX stations you could tell by watching the spin!

PS1 games won't make a noise as they load up a lot slower than ps2 games (ps1 2X, ps2 24X i think). If ur ps1 games start making wierd noises dump ps2 in bin an get new one!
