Ok, backed up vice city onto a TDK dvd-r at 1x with nero. when i play the game it goes smoothly all the time but i was doing this mission today where you steal a speed boat and when i was cruising with it the game glitched constantly. it was like after every 1-2 seconds for a about a quarter of a second. it kept happening untill i got off the boat. my question is, does this happen to anyone else on the same mission??
edit: there were no disk error messgaes either.
What vers. ps2 do you have? I would try burning at 2x instead with RNM. If that doesn't work you can blame your laser.

i have a version4 but when my messiah was installed something went wrong with the laser assembly and the guy put a whole new one in for free. I hope he didnt put an old one in though. it seems alright and has never froze on an original. ive been out in the sea before though and it didnt clog up like that. hmm, ill wait up a little bit before i burn another. dvd's are hell expensive in australia.
Yep, the speedboat bit is a common crashing point on GTAVice, must be sum intense laser reading required at that point as my m8's version 5 always used to freeze up then.
U can try a cleaning disk and try burning to better media ( I recommend traxdata dvd-r) or the alternative is to buy a version 7-9 ps2. A bit expensive but will rid the problem 4 u.
Unfortunately it just one of those things that the version 4's just don't read dvd-r brilliantly, in fact I would say u were lucky to be able to play most of the game smoothly.
Regards an sorry for negative advice

thanks otto. my ps2 doesnt crash there though. it just glitches heaps. anyway, i might do a reburn some time in the future to see if it fixes it. and my media is manufactured by maxell (sold as TDK) and they are meant to be pretty damn good. i have some taiyo yuden made TDK's also, i could try those.
BTW, all my burns make sort of squeeking sounds when loading (sometimes more or less depending on the media and burn speed). not loud though. if i put my ear real slose to the ps2 i can hear it. It sounds like when the ps2 loads cd based games but only about 1 quarter as loud and vicious. the originals all sound quiet and make deep squeeks (well not really squeeks but loading-like sounds). is this somewhat normal or should my burns sound exactly the same as the originals? how do ur burns sound???
thanks for all the help guys.
