Are they a nightmere to mod?
And does it do anything or have any better features than the black PS2?

There is not a lot of difference to be perfectly honest with you.
The only real difference is the built in DVD Remote IR, otherwise it is pretty much the same. Oh, that and the nice Silver colour.

I just know someone will put the 'Improved Laser for DVD-R Support.' It actually isn't any different to the ones in all V5-V8 consoles. Sony just realise that people need to backup their games so it is just a little marketing ploy. This does NOT mean you can play backup games WITHOUT a modchip. (That one's for the newbs who may get a little confused. I get plenty of those e-mails regarding that subject at the moment :mad: ). You have a Messiah 2 mod though, so it appears you have your head screwed on the right way. M2 are the best IMHO!

I believe the improved laser isn't for back-ups, but for people who have alot of home movies on dvd-r or dvd+rs. There is a new trend of people making thier own home movies on dvd. I don't think Sony wants anyone to think they like people using any such back-ups. Be them back-ups or rental back-ups......Get my drift??? The truth is Sony loves the fact that the PS2 will play back-ups. It isn't the software they make money on. It is the console sales. Cracking the Game Cube probably saved it!!!!

Ah....u kiddin yrselves. Sony know that a bit of piracy is good for sales of the ps2. Thats why it outsells the gamecube.

As for modding......More tricky than the version 7 cos of the vias but to be honest if u could handle a version 7 then u should do this no probs. The only problem is B-I connections on the vias. U might need to use something to remove the coating on the vias before u can solder onto them. I use a scalple blade to gently scrape the coating off but I wouldn't recommend it.

Sony does embrace backing up. Only in the shadows though. I know because I used to moderate for another forums that sold modchips and Sony was in contact with them all the time. They were only told they could sell items that didnt have any Sony code in them.
