I recommend these tools but not all are necessarily needed:

Flux (liquid or paste)
Fiberglass pen (removes laquer off the little pads)
Soldering pen
Wooden tablet to solder on
Nail Clippers (clip off extra long wire tips)
Solder
Philips Screwdriver
Precision Philips screwdriver

oh and if its your first time get a bunch of bananas. The potassium will steady your hands.

Huh? is that true. I just have a few beers. HAHA j/k

Oh also I would recommend the solder paste over the liquid as the paste is more manageable. The liquid gets all over everything and harder to apply to just what you want. Use a x-acto knife or a tooth pick with the paste. With the PSX chips you will have a easy go of things and if the mod doesn't come with its own wire (which most PSX chips come with wire and solder) use 30 AWG kynar wire for everything. No need for 22 AWG for power and ground with a PSX chip. You shouldn't need the fiberglass pen for the psx mobo either but if you do need to scrap some just use a nice new x-acto blade very lightly. A 15 watt iron is all you should need with the smallest point you can find. Radio shack has a good 15 watt iron and different tips you can buy. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Yep its true. Its what surgeons use too before an operation. Ask around youll be suprised.

Although I dont recommend the beer till after your done doing the install.

Oh crap I didnt even notice he said PS1! Dude those are easy. I even used telephone wire to wire those suckers up. Ive done tons of ps1s.

This shoulda been in the ps1 section.

Anyways about the liquid solder, I just dip the wire tips in it and solder to them. Or I use the wire tips themselves to brush on the very fine liquid. Never had a problem yet.

wow how dose the solder paste work is it gooey and u just stick it on a point and solder ? to harden it when i try a ps2 i used the normal solder and its a job trying to solder on what u want to solder to cause it only turns liquid when hot

no no no..... solder paste doesn't work like that. It just helps to clean the point you are soldering to while you apply the iron and solder. It helps to make a good clean bond with the wire the solder and the point being soldered to. Its also known as flux. Most solder has flux or rosin in its core but as anyone that has done an install before knows your not really applying the solder to the point your soldering at the same time your heating the point with your iron, you just put a little bit of solder on the tip of the iron thus the rosin core solder doesn't work the way it would under normal soldering conditions. This is why solder paste/liquid flux is helpful.

The best and really only soldering tip is to practice on an old dead motherboard or electronical device.
