what choices do I have for an external mod?

One, A usb mod that still requires 1 wire to be soldered. it works only for certain CD-r games, no DVD backups will load, some must be patched......IMO a waste of money.

Bad choice, Buy a real modchip. The slide card can damage the PS2.
