wrong forum, but to answer your question, yes i have tried dvdxcopy xpress and it is very easy to use, but Instantcopy 7/8 and dvdshrink3b5 (this one is free) provide much better video quality when transcoding is necesery.
there are actually a lot of tools that allow you transcode and of course re-encode (like CCE) for much better quality.
have a look here (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?forumid=65) a big forum dedicade to all kinds of DVD stuff.

-firstly lets not use the word copy, copy sounds to illegal, lets use backup
-instantcopy will not rip movies and will not work with encrypted video so you do have to use dvddecrypter (or similar tool), however when it comes to video quality, this is the best one click tool to use.
-dvdshrink3 beta5 comes second in video quality, and best of all it's free, this tool will rip and decrypt movies so you don't have to use anything else.
-the first time you do anything will always be hard, it's just like anything else, after you do your first backup with whatever program you use, it will be sinch after that
-also search for guides/tutorials on doom9, i'm sure you'll find some

last time i used dvddecrypter it took 2 hours and was not even 1/2 way through doing what it was doing so i said hell with it and cancled it out i didnt want the movie that bad and my friends 1.8 gig pc he said it takes him about 5 hours to rip a movie i cant do it that long cause i need the pc to do other things im going to try dvd xpress and if it looks and sounds ok i will use that if not i will just buy the dvds i want used its not a biggy

no way 5 hours, there is something way wrong there, I got a 1.8gig chip and 16x dvd-rom and it takes around 20 minutes to rip a dvd9 (around 8gigs).
make sure there are no scratches and such on the dvd and makes sure you unlock the dvd don't just put it in and begin ripping put it in and play it a little with cineplayer or windvd then close you dvd playing software and begging ripping
ripping should not take more than 30 minutes.

"if not i will just buy the dvds i want used its not a biggy"
the help you receive here is to help you protect movies/games that you legally own, not to copy stuff you don't own, so don't say stuff like that..........this is a none warez forum

- I doubt widescreen had anything to do with it, most of the movies i backup are widescreen

-did you backup the full dvd or movie only? I do movie only (much better results)

- give dvdshrink a try you could get it here: http://www.dvdshrink.org
after u pick a language a new window shows up click on "where" (on the bottom) then way on the bottom click on "DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5" to download.

it did the movie it left out all the extras i guess to give it more room so looks like it would all fit on it i will try dvdshrink if its not alot of stuff to do just to make the dvd

man this this progrm if hard to figer out it dose not have a help file and dose not tell how to use it i get it were it says 4.551 mb which is 4.5 gigs but yet it still says that wont fit on a dvd im like wtf that got 200 mb extra how could that not fit i cant figer how to get rid of the menus and sub titles and carp

kooldraco
07-09-2003, 19:39
actually 4.5gig is like 120mb over…… here are the specs:
Blank DVD-R 4,489MB = 4,706,074,624 bytes or 4.383GB
Blank DVD+R 4,483MB = 4,700,372,992 bytes or 4.377GB

so basically on a dvd-r you can only write 4,489mb of info which is equal to 4.38gig, even though they advertise as being 4.7gigs they are only 4.38 gigs or 4,489mb

dvdshrink will work with 4,464mb giving it 25mb for chance of error (most programs do this they just don’t show it)

dvdshrink is not hard to use: if u want to backup the movie only do this

• Make sure u have dvdshrink3 beta 5 and put the dvd on you drive
• Open up shrink, hit the “open disk” button and choose your drive
• Hit the “re-author” button and new window will popup
• From your original window under “folder structure” there is a movie folder just drag the main movie to the other window (to the folder structure part)
• You can close your original window, if you have multiple movies under folder structure then delete the ones you don’t need (right click, delete), sometimes they put extra features or a second movie (fullscreen/widescress) in there too.
• Choose the audio and subpictures (subtitles) you want to keep
• Under video just keep it in automatic it choose the percentage necessary for the dvd to fit
• You can also press the analyze button for a deep scan which will take about 25-45 minutes (depends on how long the movie is), this will significantly improve the video quality (I only use it if compression percentages is lower than 70%)
• Hit the backup button and choose a folder to save to and wait for the files to be created

Now burning

• RecordNow max 4.5 is the most efficient program to use (under default settings)
• Create 2 folders on your desktop one called “VIDEO_TS” and the other “AUDIO_TS” (without the quotes and note the CAPITALS and underscore)
• Put all the files created by shrink on the “VIDEO_TS” folder, once there u can use any dvd playing software to see the results before you burn the movie to a disc
• Open up recordnow and choose a data disc (close the wizard), hit the “add files and folders” button and add the 2 folders, yes the “AUDIO_TS” folder is empty, but some dvd players will not work without it, do not just put all the files on the root of the dvd because it won’t work
• Burn and you are done.

You should be able to disable the commentary either with your remote or through the menu.

EVOEvo
08-09-2003, 09:40
i will give that a try i dont think the movie has a menu cause its been shrinked but i will try and disable it

kooldraco
08-09-2003, 15:25
bighap is corrent
you can disable or choose the audio tracks with the remote (no menu becuase you only backed up the movie)
however if you don't want the commentary to be in the movie at all then only pick the main audio when backing up the movie (bullet point #6 on my previous post)

EVOEvo
08-09-2003, 15:37
ok i would rather it not be on there so theres like 4 check boxes that r in the audio folder which one do i uncheck for it not to have that

kooldraco
08-09-2003, 15:53
most of the time the audio comentary are put at the bottom
I usually only keep one audio track English 6ch(5.1) AC3 sometimes you also get DTS or 2ch audio and different languages too so it's really up to what you want
also sometimes there are 2 or 3 (maybe more) audio comentary tracks, but like I said they usually are pushed to the bottom
or for a better solution you can play the dvd on your pc and listen to all the different audio tracks with you dvd playing software.

ok when i ripped fast and the ferious it took me 80 mins first time ten 80 mins again is there any way to speed this up cause thats along time how fast dose this go on urs i got a 1.4 gig amd and dvd xpress copyed alot quicker then this program and had great pic qualty but it just frozze up if it didnt do that it would work great and only took like 1 hour to read and burn dvdshrink takes 2 hours 40 mins thats for just reading and another hour to burn

kooldraco
08-09-2003, 19:41
sounds like you are doing something wrong, most movies take me about 30 minutes to get it from the original dvd to my hardrive ready to burn (movie only) using dvdshrink, i got 1.8 gig chip.
why does it take you 80 minutes? and twice?
did you follow the steps i gave you?

EVOEvo
08-09-2003, 21:28
yeah it reads the dvd all way through and starts over again for some reson did it both times i used the porogram i dont know why unless its the deep scan that causes it to do this i noticed the first read it dose not say the disk space its takeing up but on the 2nd read it will count from 100 mb to 4.3 gigs and such i know dvd xpress went fast on doing the ripping and burning

kooldraco
08-09-2003, 21:42
are you pressing the "analysis" button, if you are then don't press it anymore you don't have to. only do it if you have like a 3 hour movie.
if that's not the case then I don't know what it could be, i dont' know why it repeats it self

when you say "it reads the dvd all the way throug" do you mean when you press the "open disk" button and window pops up so that you can select the drive where your movie is at, after that it begins reading the disk, is that where it takes 80 minutes? cuz that should only take like 3-5 minutes.

EVOEvo
08-09-2003, 21:43
ok i figerd it out the deep scan takes about 45 mins alone then the read to hd takes about 45 mins then the burn is about 1 hour so if i leave deep scan off it wont take as long how much of a difrance dose deep scan make cause on the lil preview screen they both look the same on quailty cause on dvd xpress it had great pic qualty and it didnt do a deep scan

kooldraco
08-09-2003, 22:15
like i said you don't need the deep scan.... only on movies that are really big and you have to shrink a lot

the video quality without the deep scan is still better than dvdxcopy xpress (trust me, i've compared the 2)

also it should give you a percentage on the little video box, what is it?
only if that percentage is lower than 70% then i recommend you use a deep scan, but a movie like fast and furious if you do movie only and cut out the extra features and extra audio then it should be pretty close to 100% which is no compression at all meaning the videio is left alone and you get the exact original video

did i mention you can cut out the credits at the end of the movie to make a movie shorter and get like an extra 200-300 megs, but we'll leave that for another day.... when you get more confortable with the program.... for now I got to go to sleep

EVOEvo
08-09-2003, 22:42
ok so lower then 70% i think fast and the ferious was like 68% it was almost 70% right now im doing botherhood of the wolf clan and when i got the vide and audio check boxes there was something called subpicture it had check boxes but i un checked them all i didnt think i would need these and i took out the french audio just left in english and on some movies that has deleted sences could i add just them onto a movie and take off the extra junk like the makeing of the moive and video com and stuff and i think i know what u was talking about with the cerdits the start to end icon i went it but didnt know how to use it but i think u can tell it to start at first of moive and end right aftr the last sence

kooldraco
09-09-2003, 09:39
fast and foriouse shoud not be 68% if you are doing movie only, you are probobly doing the entire dvd

if the deleted scenes are not part of the main movie then you would need to join those scenes like at the end of the movie or something, i've read that you can do it with dvdshrink, but it's complicated, i've never done it (i only do main movies)

EVOEvo
09-09-2003, 11:40
ok its prob to hard for me to figer out i will just stick with the movie and the botherhood it works great and dose not have the stupid video com talking all through it :)

from what I'm gathering about dvdshrink you Can select your audio tracks and stuff? I want to back up my special edtion movie of Versus which I spent like four months tracking down and I want to use the japanese 5.1 surround sound and the japanese 2.0 stereo sound with english subtitles instead of the english dub and other commentary tracks and the like. Also which version is better? the new dvdshrink beta 5 or dvdshrink 2.3?

kooldraco
16-09-2003, 16:01
most dvd backup programs let you pick out the audio tracks and subtitles that you like (including dvdshrink of course)
dvdshrink3 beta5 is the best so far

MrCaine01
16-09-2003, 22:10
is there any way to do episodic dvds with dvdshrink 3 beta 5? That way i can back up my family guy and simpsons dvds?

Most of the transcoders available like DVD Shrink, DVD2One, Instant Copy, etc...will allow you to backup your full disk
