View Full Version : Replacing PS2 Laser

Is there a local place that can do this. I know of PSX-Tech in San Fran, but any other Sacramento, Stockon locations? I ask this because appearantly my laser in my ps2 is shot to all hell, and is seemingly only picking up CD-r's (action replay loads fine as well as an old gameshark), but now wont pick up any DVD-r games. It is sadly a version4 (that LOOKS like a version5 - ).

you can order the laser head from many places on the net and replace the laser yourself, it's really not that hard

Yea, but BigHap pretty much told me I will always have laser problems (I have), and trouble reading DVD-R's (I have), so it's best just to say ok, and go with the Version7 (which u seem to have a few of - ;) ). No fuss, no muss. Now it's only a matter of getting some good DVD-R's.

And what's up with your A05, did u modify that or something (have same burner).

Yeah for no hastles get a new ps2.

kooldraco has just used a hacked firmware for his A05. You can download it here (http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/DVR-105%20v1.33%20-%20RPC-1%20+%202xDVD-R%20+%2012xRip.zip)

What does it do exactly.

My problem is that theres just SO much - in the last couple of days I have seen both people supporting and rejecting the choices I've made:

Got a Magic (the red one) - heard it had synching problems but installer fixed that with an update that was put out there to make it behave like a Messiah.

Got a Pioneer A05 - no problems yet, however, I'm looking at Alcohol 120% and i get AVERAGE burn speed of 2.1 speed when I set it to Maximum. ? Whats going on there? Not to mention I rip DVD's and get the MD-whatever files, YET I reburn that and it doesnt read in MY ps2 (the **** one with the v4 laser - dear god i cant wait to get off work get me a new one), nor in ANOTHER persons modded Ps2 (although others do work, not burned by me). So I feel it could be the medium surely but. . .

Got several Burn Programs - . . .could be the PROGRAM too. I've used RecordMax, Alcohol, to burn, yet got same results. I think I'll first try different medium before switching proggies and what not.

The reason I dont like doing one-to-ones is - with me at least, it's ALOT easier for the read from tray to go all wonky, reading and copying, and a file is a nice temp file sitting there. And I've seen the FILE people using the same file extension as Alcohol 120 uses - so its GOT to be a right file or all the folks burning bootlegs wouldnt be able to do anything.

Of course ive seen TONS of other file extensions that furhter make my vein on my forehead pop out.

Burning CD-R's was ALOT easier.

the hack allows you to burn 1x dvd-rs at 2x and rip dvds at 12x

2.1 burn speed for dvd-r?

to backup your dvd ps2 games do this
download and install dvddecrypter (if you havent already)
once installed go to the menubar and on the mode menu choose iso then read
put your disc on a drive and choose the correct drive on dvddecrypter, then just hit the decrypt button (make sure you know where your iso will be at)
once done use recordnowmax (in image mode) to load your iso and burn
if burn is successful and your ps2 does not read the disc then blame the media

I heard ISO wasnt a valid Ps2 image type. . .? I know i tried to burn it as such using Fireburner (useful program for me), and no go.

But I will use that method - so basically i can get 1x dvds and burn at 2x speed. since thts what im getting ANYWAY may as well downgrade the dvd's.

No, no. It's ISO's which are created in MODE1 which are invalid PS2 image types. Providing you create your PS2 image in MODE2, you should be fine!

Hope this helps...

hmm easiest way is to use record now to read and write just make disk to disk copy

ED! , I have replaced lazers on a few PS2's and they are still working fine. As a matter of fact the last laser I replaced was one from Rescue, you should know where that is being in SAC and all. Any ways screw all those other proggies a stick with record now max for PS2 DVD games and clone CD for CD-rom games. Always make an image to the HDD and then burn the CD-R/DVD-R from the image with the appropriate proggie. Get your self a Messiah 2 pro or apple pro and just be happy.

also the lazer was in a V4 from resuce :)

hi lufcfan, you mean mode2 is create for cdr or create for dvdr?
i don't know how to change to mode2 in dvd, but i can chage to mode2 when i burn in cd image. i also use dvd decrypter to create

Only CD-R's need to be done in MODE2. DVD's need to be written DAO (or disc at once). MODE1 and MODE2 only apply to CD-R so if you are burning a DVD then you don't need to worry about this...

Hope this helps wongsyc,

What step by step did you follow? Use RecordNow Max 4.50. It is the best. Just make an exact copy.

For instructions on doing this visit my site. (http://www.mjpaul.freeserve.co.uk)

That site is really informative LUC. I didnt know some of those games have ALREADY excedded the 4.37 limits on DVD-R's. To make backups do you need a DVD9 disc then? -

And what image should the files generally be saved into?

You can not buy dvd9 discs. You are thinking of dvd10, which is just a 4.7 gb dvd on each side. To burn these games you must use a ripkit.

I wasnt actually thinking about dvd10 - hell I didnt even know they could operate like that. You'd think I would since my USUAL SUSPECTS SE DVD is double sided. Great googaly-moogaly! Ripkits - I'm assuming these make those ps2 games that are 400megs then. Bleah, and double bleah. Do they come with info on what they will rip out?

Metal Gear Solid 2 Substace can ge split onto 2 dics and Xenosaga downsamples the video sequences allowing it to fit onto one disc. There is no kit for Xenosaga. The entire 4gb file has to be downloded. You are better off buying a HK silver.

ED!
20-08-2003, 13:16
HK silver?

And this I dont understand - I have XENOSAGA, I want it on a dvd, I open its contents and all I see are files, no specific video files etc. And what 4gb file? The XENO one.

bighap
20-08-2003, 13:20
Xenosaga has been ripped, but there is no kit. You have to download the entire 4 gb game file off the web. For an explanation on what HK silver is look here (http://www.fileforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48064)

Hi ED!,
Sorry for the long time in waiting for my reply but basically, I use RecordNow MAX for DVD's which makes a .gi image and Alcohol 120% for CD's which makes a .mds image. My site is in the process of a re-design (and VERY good it is looking too, :D)

Hope this helps...

So basically - all games larger than 4.3 will not fit on the 4.7 DVD's (XENOSAGA, MSG) in their NATURAL states, and the only way to play them on a backup is to find it - and those will have been ripped. Got it. Sucks but got it.

Question - I see DVD9 ready on Magics and Messiahs (i got a magic that the installer said behaved like a messiah since magic has "synching" problems or something), does this mean that in the FUTURE they will be able to support "pressed" DVD9 backups or just that they now support DVD9 discs.

lufcfan
20-08-2003, 13:44
If a chip is DVD9 ready, it basically means that it will support ANY kind of DVD9. Pressed DVD9 is the only kind available. You can't burn on them because of the two layers, so pressing them is the only way...

Got it modded right. Tried a final Great Quality DVD-R for ****s and giggles. It worked.

KICK A##! I am in heaven now.

Off to play some Silent Hill 3 at 10 at night.

I ditched the v4 - got a v7, and it reads GQ's like Gangbusters. :D

Too bad I got home late, had to watch my smackdown, or I would have been playing like a madman. As it is MC2, Silent Hill 3, and Romance of the three kingdoms 8 are all vying for my attention.
