i think the drive comes locked at 2x read speed, the 12xrip hack just unlocks the drive so that you can dump your dvd files to your harddrive much faster, although the hack only seems works for pressed (originals) dvds.

The A05 will read a dvd @ 12X with no hack....(It will even read my backups on dvd-r @ 12x)

I use firmware 1.30 with a 2x Ritek hack so I can burn 1X Riteks @ 2X.... :)

really, with no hack? that's weird I remember ripping dvd movies with my 105 using official firmware with dvddecrypter and the read rate would just lock at 2.1x.
maybe you got lucky, or some of us got screwed

When I got my A05....... (The day after it was released) It would rip dvd movies (pressed originals) @ 12X.... This is of course assuming that the original was in good shape..... After I burned a couple of my movies I tried ripping one of my backed up movies on the A05... It also would rip @ 12X....

This was all done using the original (first) firmware.....
I had heard rumors that later drives had their dvd read speeds slowed down (by firmware) but this is the FIRST instance that I actually had someone to verify that......

So I guess its like you said" I GOT LUCKY" hehe:)

I was read that once you update to 1.33, you cannot go back and also it won't support older DVD-R for general Version 1.1 media.

I am just wonder is it ture that you cannot downgrade your firmware once upgraded to 1.33 and how do you find out what version is your media?

there is also a hack that can reset your drive back to the official 0.58 fw, then you can upgrade to what ever you want (1.00, 1.21 or 1.33)
yes, i have heard that pioneer blacklists some dvd media on their fw updates, however at the same time they add support for new dvd media, so it's really up to you and your needs
not to sure about the dvd media detection, but most 4.7gb media is v2 (i think 4.7gb media was deifned firsly as v1.9) v1 media is 3.95gb and most dvd-rw drives will work with v1 media.

Do you know where to find the 0.58 fw? May be useful.

you could run the hack with in windows in a dos box just use upgdvd /F (note the capital F and the space) syntax under Command Prompt
