how do you know what version you are buying

Search on the internet for a list of PS2 Serial numbers. Use something like Google and type in something along the lines of 'PS2 Serial Numbers List' and print it out. (make sure it is the right list for your region (e.g.: PAL, NTSC, JAP)) and then head off down to the shops. Look on the front of the PS2 box. On the bottom left it has a small rectangle which contains the region and below that, the serial number. (e.g.: SCPH-##### / SCPH-#####R) and then take a look at your list. Find the corresponding serial number and look at what version the console is. Try to get hold of a V7 / V8 if possible. They are the newest (well here in the UK anyway)
