View Full Version : Is It Worth Getting A DVD Burner now for PS2 Games?

I'm contemplating whether I should purchase a DVD Burner to make backups of my PS2 Games (Have about 30 or so at the moment). Also I would be able to make backups of my DVDs (Have about 60 of these...). I'm curious about whether at the moment the DVD Burner (Planning to get the Pioneer A06 External Firewire/USB 2.0) is worth getting. I'm mainly concerned about games that I will be unable to burn. Are there any games which prove impossible to burn? I'm getting a Messiah 2 Pro for my PS2. Also are there any future protection for PS2 games which will prevent creating backups? Any thoughts/suggestions would be great! Thanks! :D

It is definately worth buying a dvd burner. There are only 3 games that are uncopyable: Xenosaga, Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance, and Gsakura Wars Atsuki Chishiyo Ni(jap), because thety are dvd9. Rip kit are released that make these games burnable, such as Xenosaga. The video sequences are downsampled to allow the game to fit onto a dvd.

Sweet Deal! How's the burner that I'm planning to buy? Is it good for multiple applications/uses? Darn no DVD9 copying games. Oh well, I guess I can try and do the rip thing for my Xenosaga..(Don't want to use the original, want to keep it in mint! Must collect the series ya know!) So what would be a recommended burner? I heard the Pioneer A05 and such are good, but I'm looking towards the A06. Any major performance differences besides being able to burn +/- RW/R? Don't mind the cost really.... $300 isn't bad. Thanks for the comments, and keep them coming! :D

Also is the downsampling of games using the rip kits, a major difference in the movies and such? Hows the quality and gameplay and such? Worth the time and effort? Thanks!

Thing is that the A05 is available for half the A06 price and as you can burn DVD-R at 4x who needs DVD+R?

Greatest purchase ever made (after Messiah 2!). To write a DVD movie at 4x is 20 mins tops. Brilliant. Ditto PS2 backups.

Well worth having.

Also Gran Turismo Concept 2002 Tokyo-Geneva is DVD-9 also....

Another note: Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance IS capable of being backed up..........

There is a tutorial floating around which shows you the necessary means to backup a dvd-9 game.....

It DOES work also.... I have personally used it to backup MGS2 Substance (JAP) on 2 dvd-r's.......

So before long, you will probably start seeing rip kits for DVD-9 games....

Oh.... Almost forgot......

GET THE A05........ It is AWESOME....... :)

I'm VERY leery personally of dual-format burners.

The Sony has a HUGE problem database. Any popular DVD burning site is filled with reports of bad BIOSes for the DRU-500.

The NEC dual-format burner (1300A) has a plethora of media compatibility problems, even some media that works on their +R only burner (1100A) doesn't work on it.

I haven't seen any first-hand reports of the A06 yet, but I'm very leery, I am starting to think there's something intrinsically problematic about dual-format burner engines.
