Once having a chip installed is it possible to replace it with a different chip at a later date? Reason I ask is i dont have a lot of money and just incase my current magic 3.1 doesnt play some of the newer games in say a year from now could I have a different chip put in and it removed? Or is it once in always in kinda thing?
Can you disable one and put in a second? etc?
Yes, a mod can be removed no problem. The points just have to be desoldered and cleaned up.
But on the other hand, your Magic 3.1 isn't so bad... everyone poo-poos it but it'll boot MOST games, and can be disabled for originals.

Yes Im not worried about games right now. Any game i want to play ill backup and im sure it will work, and if not oh well... im just worried about the future eventually square will do what they did in ps1 by doing some protection in games that check for the modchip and dont let you run anygame be it original or burn. IN that case I was wondering if i could install a new modchip at a later date.

The Magic 3 has been PROVEN not to boot ALOT of games......
The Magic 2 seems to boot more games than the Magic 3...
This is the reason that spending the extra 20-30 bucks on a Messiah 2 (Or even the Original Messiah) is worth EVERY penny.
Remember...... YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.......
Just buy the Messiah 2, and have someone swap it out for your Magic 3.1..... Its not very difficult and will have MUCH better results....
Its interesting to me how everyone talks about how the Magic line of chips will play most things and considering that the ORIGINAL Messiah will still PLAY EVERYTHING that has came out....
So which is the better value.......?

Its not a question of money. I had mine fitted with Magic3.1 because the local installer that was all he did, he didnt do M2. And i dont trust anyone near enuf to send them my ps2. So a M3.1 is fine.
