Hi guys,

newbie i guess- been lurking for a while reading (jus joined) and learning what i could from some very knowlegable members. Just got my ps2 v7 and chipped it messiah 2 with help from this forum!

Searched on this but still not sure... how the reset button works on the PS2? doesn't seem to do anything on mine (even before i chipped it). When i turn it on the reset button is red with the fan off (standby mode i assume). Pushing/holding the reset button does nothing. Only when i push the eject button does the reset button turn green tray ejects, and the fan/ps2 runs. Now pushing/holding the reset still does nothing!

Seems maybe the cable/connector isn't working- but is not having the reset function affecting my ability to play backups? Put in my 1st backup of GTA vice city using Roxio easy cd (know it's not good- but all i have right now :( ) and nec 1100a burner on verbatim dvd+R: got RSOD. Messiah 2 should play it automatically right? shouldn't need reset i think. If that's the case then i think it's probably the software that gives me RSOD!?
Ps2 Plays dvds and originals just fine- just put em in and they play- am i missing anything ?? thanks for any suggestions..

Sounds like your reset cable came loose. You need to use the reset button to boot backups, so this is something that should be fixed.

On a working Messiah 2, DVD movies shouldn't play at all unless you hold down the reset button until the eject button light turns on.

Yeah, thats what i thought!

I shouldn't be able to play dvds unless i switch it into the dvd/ps1 mode with the reset button, but put in the dvd and it plays. Makes me wonder if my chip is any good. i cant switch modes obviously to check, but i'm gonna take it apart tonight and see if anythings wrong with the cable. I tried playing my ps1 backups and it didn't work so it can't be in that mode i guess... any other guesses?? :)

misinstall
ps2 bootups wont boot (wiring)
dvd movies boot in ps2 mode, wiring messiah 2 is fitted incorrect

I just took the cover off my ps2 (don't wanna take the whole thing apart to check everything- i'm pretty confident i installed the messiah 2 correctly as i am a computer engineer and have great soldering skills :D ) anyways the cable seems seated well and it is not damaged as i did a continuity check.

Checking the surface mount switches themselves, the eject button functions properly with 2 of its 4 point connections shorting to the other 2 when the button is pressed. All 4 points of the reset button however are always shorted together regardless of whether the button is pushed or not. (Consistent with my ps2 turning on in standby mode red reset+blue eject? and reset performs no function?)

I think this is the problem and this needs to be replaced as i'm assuming it should function identical to the eject button which works just fine. Anyone know a little more technical details about this or can try a continuity test on their working reset to verify how it should function? It is obviously a momentary tactile pushbutton- anyone know more? thanks 4 any 411 :)

Ok.. perhaps too technical.

Can someone jus tell me when you turn on the ps2 what color should the LED's be on the reset and eject buttons? after i turn on power my reset button is red and the eject button is off. The only way to play anything is to push the eject button which then turns blue, the fan comes on tray ejects and reset light now turns green (reset still does nothing though). Is this how the ps2 is supposed to work? If not how?

Yes, your lights are the right color and are turning on at the right time. If your reset was working, it would turn green when you pushed it and your blue eject light would turn on as well.

Cool!

That lil bit of info is very helpful and enough to start on. Removed the switch from the PCB but the 4 corner pads are still all shorted together.(sigh) gonna have to take my ps2 completely apart now to troubleshoot some more. really appreciate the replies though. Thanks! :p

Sounds like you might have bridged something somewhere, yeah?

We're all decent solderers, but a lot of these points are easy to goon up.

Plus if you hit a VIA it might not be making a connection. If a chip doesn't work during testing, I usually continuity test every tricky point.

Hey Guys! got the reset switch fixed!!

Took the console apart but everything seemed fine. I detached the ribbon cable from the ZIF socket and reseated it and the short seemed to go away. Wish i had tried that first before removing the surface mount push button. I had to destroy it to get it out (assumed it was bad). Well just resoldered a new one here from work and it fuctions the way Bighap said. Awesome! can't wait to get home and test some backups!:D

knew it wasn't the install- I do micro-soldering for a living and did it under my microscope workstation to make perfect connections that i checked. Thought maybe a wire couldv'e been shorted by a screw or something though as i read in a previous post.

Just got my HP 300i DVD burner in the mail which comes with recordnowmax and i'll try some verbatim +R backups tomorrow maybe. Learned everything from this forum- Thanks for all the tips guys- Anyone in S. Florida need a messiah 2 pro installed? :D

Glad you got everything sorted. Make sure the version of RNM you get with your burner is 4.50. If it isn't, download this (http://downloads.stompinc.com/support/stprnm450v.exe) file. It will upgrade you to 4.50. Happy burning.:)

If you are confident of your install then all should work well now. I am assumeing that with the having your reset button shorted like that, in essence always pushed down, it was disabling your messiah 2 chip. When reset is held for 5 seconds the chip is turned off. This would allow your DVD movies to play.

Hey glad you got it working. Didn't realize you were THAT competent with a soldering iron. :)

I also have had the problem as danshaki with the reset button not working. I just finished my mod-chip install last night. I will try to document everything I know.

The difference between me and him is that DVD movies will not boot for me. Nor will PS1 backups (don't have a PS2 backup to try yet). Original games will load fine.

The electrons will whirl, browser can be reached, and original games can be seen and booted. DVD movies can be recognized as a DVD video disc, but when tried to play, only black screen results and no reading action even though disc is spinning.

Lights on buttons function normally, only eject button powers on console, only rear power switch can turn power off, holding reset button for any length of time has no impact at all.

Could the reset wire be the cause of this?

I have a Messiah 2 installed in a V5/V6 (V6 I think) PS2.

Used liquid flux, 15 watt soldering iron, 30 awg insulated wire. Have checked all connections for continuity and resistors for resitance. All appears normal however I wonder if some of the connections may not be good enough, particularly on the BIOS pins. I had a hard time checking the SCEx wire due to close proximity of other resistors and large test leads on my multimeter.

I have assembled after initial install, dissassembled, rechecked everything, beefed up some flimsy connections, retested crosses and reassembled. Same condition with non-booting DVD movies and backup games, along with non-functional reset button.

Can anyone help me? Just out of curiosity. Can someone check the continuity of the SCEx resistor connection and the closest adjacent connection? They are connected, I think purposefully on the board but i want to be sure I didn't jump them by accident. If someone has time for that can you give me the readings on the resistance of the SCEx, clk (alt) and A resistors? I would be most appriciative. I should have checked beforehand.

Even if no specific help can be given are there any suggestions for ensuring proper connections? I also fear my BIOS wires may be too long, (longer than 25cm) I will have to get back to you on that.

Thank you so much.

I must update what I said before. DVD movies will play in my system, I must have fixed something when i opened it up today. However "fixing" that still leaves me in the same boat as danshaki. I have checked the connection of the buttons ribbon cable on both ends, everything is in order. Reset button still doesn't work. I tried holding the reset button while powering on my brothers PS2, it reacts the same way as mine so I suspect it is the same case as the other one, (disabling the messiah 2 because it is constantly being held)

However I would still like suggestions on how to fix it or what could be wrong.

Thanks

I would check your reset/eject cable first. there is a good cahnce that one end or the other is not inserted properly or a screw or something snagged and cut a wire in it.

It was not my ribbon cable as I said I had already tested it. Things were fine, something was screwy with the mod chip. I desoldered the RST cable and booted up the PS2, it worked fine for PS2 games and backups but obviously could not be switched into DVD or PS1 mode. I resoldered the RST wire making sure to do a good job and it seemed to do the trick. It now works for all formats. except DVD-R since I have no way of testing that. I am sure it will work though since PS2 CD-Rs work fine.

I do still have a color problem on PS1 games. I am hoping someone else posted something about that in here, maybe it has to do with the color fix point.
