You do NOT need a mod to play backed up dvd movies. DVD X Copy is the easiest dvd copy program. It keeps original dvd quality but usualy requires two dvds, as most dvd movies are dvd9. Or you can go with dvd2one. This program compresses the movie to fit onto one dvd, usually with little noticeable loss in quality. DVD X Copy Xpress also does this, but only keeps the movie itself, removing the menu and extras. This allows for less compression necessary. Have a read on the dvd backup and cd/dvd software & utilities boards for more info on these programs, or you can PM me. I would be happy to help out.:)

I'm going to be getting a ps 2 soon

I've read that the ps 2 can play divx but does this mean it will play avi files ?

It will play XVID and DIVX encoded AVI files, using the PS2Reality player.
