it doesn't read disks anymore, i cleaned the lens w/ a lens cleaner, but i can't get it to read disks (i get "disk read error") which i assume means really dirty lens, or dead lens, but i'm not sure so correct me if i'm wrong.

thanx

Before you do anything try a cleaning disc.

good call, or you can look in the search fuction, and look up laser, it may need replacing, but i bet the magic chip messed up something

hmm...well it was working perfectly yesterday and it just crapped out last night, i tried laser cleanser and it didn't work, and dvd and cd's don't work....yea i'll try to change the laser, do you really think the magic chip did something to it? if so what do you recommend?

I doubt it, what version is your ps2?

It is a v4, so the laser could be on its way out or just need some tweaking.

or the cd dvd controller wires came off, or were somehow joined. i remember the v4, i hate it

so does that mean it will be hard to open it up and repair myself...because i think i'm willing to risk learning how to fix it myself (for future reference) however i would rather not break it (obviously!!!)....otherwise i'll just send it to someone....because you think it's just the laser right? oh well

thanx again!!

chris

good luck man, hope things work out good for you and your ps2

I hope this gets to you in time. Anytime you do any work inside a PS2 , especially on the laser, it is important that you ground yourself out on any nearby ground piece of metal. This helps prevent a static discharge that could potentially ruin a part of the motherboard or the laser. If you change the laser you will find it is very simple. Once the DVD tray is out remove four large head screws. Then the bars that the laser is on will pull out. Take off the little white plastic arm off the old laser and put it on the new and slide that one on the rails. If you buy a new laser also make sure to desolder the points that should be connected for safety during travel.

alright, just for an update, i opened up the ps2 and cleaned the laser, put it back together and it didn't work, so i assume now that the laser is dead...however (and i know i shouldn't have done this) but when i was looking at the laser and i turned it on, i saw a red light does that mean the laser is working? or does it mean that it is just seeing if a disk is there b/c the ps2 def. doesn't work..oh well i assume that the laser is crapped out which in that case means i will buy a laser and replace is myself...thanx a bunch, also the white wheel which is for alignment, how can i properly align it? i mean if i turn it left what happens vs. if i turn it right? thanks a bunch

i know i'm not supposed to look at the laser, but i was looking away, and i could see the flash....i don't have yahoo messenger sorry man, don't worry about the "burning of the retina" crap, b/c really it's for prolonged exposure, if i saw it, it was for like 1 sec....

and san francisco, but going to school at UO in eugene, OR

No real worry with the laser unless your eye is in direct line with it any way, you can see it without being directly over it. Since you have alreadu gotten your PS2 apart and back together OK why don't you try and buy yourself some time on this laser by giving it a little power boost. You can find a guide called "Recalibrating your PS2 Laser" and one that tells you how to change the laser in the FAQS section at www.PS2NEWZ.net You may have to register but there is alot of good info on this forum.

thanx headly, can you send me a direct link to the guide? i can't seem to find it and i registered, but i have figured out how to install the laser, it was really really simple....however i'm not quite sure about calibrating, so if there is a link it would be greatly appreciated

THANX ALL FOR THE HELP
