View Full Version : New PS2 Model: SCPH-50000 (Added Modchip News)
The new model will be released May 15th in Japan(also the release date of the Matrix Reloaded in the US). Sounds good. Check it out here (http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/030414e.pdf)
Sounds very cool, designing it to work better with the recordable DVDs and all.
You think there is a way to integrate those improved lasers into older versions of the PS2?
YES!!! I will get that version and have it modded with a messiah 2.

why did sony make the 5000 series read dvd-r and +r better if they hate pirted softwere unless they mean this for copied dvd movies which still would prob be prited

I was thinking that meself. I suppose appealing to the increasing home usage of dvd-r videos outweighed the side effect of making the pirate's life easier (which is a losing battle anyway).
It doesn't say anything about improving recorded media playback. It just says it is now supported, which it has been for quite some time, just never advertised.

Don't know. We don't even have the v8 yet. Maybe we will get this instead of the v8....????
My favorite part of this is the quieter fan. I hate watching a movie at night and having to crank the volume due to the whhhhhrrrrr.
Now the question is when is the messiah and other chips going to be updated so they are compatable with this version?
Probably as soon as the Messiah team gets their hands on one of these new systems.

do they look the same
I seriously doubt that Sony would totally redo their entire case design. I would imagine that it will be exactly the same case with the addition of one liitle shinny black spot for the IR sensor. They could even locate it on the lower part of the unit so that it sits back a little and is not that obvious.

v8 still hard to find ,it had new copied game protection it stopped old chips working, these have been cracked a while now
u can gaurantee sony knows this
my guess is it will have internal changes, aimed at stoping our poor little chips,we will soon see
bighap the article actually states improved dvd laser,it better be a new better laser, false advertising if not
I have read it 3 times have still don't see any mention to an improved laser.
I don't see anywhere that it actually mentions an improved laser. It simply states that it will have new DVD capabilities that they decribes as DVD-/+R and RW playback.
And the ps2 has been able to play all those since the v5.:o
My V7 doesn't really play any other dvd-r's all that well besides Ritek's. Games skip, movies chop. I would hope if they are advertising that the new PS2's are dvd-r compatible it would mean more than one brand. But you never know...

I say the iLink port will be replaced by IR sensors
Nothing else.....
Probably. While firewire (ilink) is, in fact, superior to USB (even USB 2.0) it is also pricier and not as well supported. Add to that the inconvenience of putting your PS2 within 2 feet of the other guy's PS2... I mean, has anyone actually DONE that? I sure haven't.

it doesnt actually state improved laser
but it states it will read dvd-r dvd-rw dvd+r dvd+rw
v5 v6 v7 none of these read all the above formats reliably
im sure the laser will be improved
but i sure new protection will be in there as well
ie previously mentioned by charlie( grr giving somy ideas)
if disk is entered and passes as ps2 disk, they could take a reading from the laser,it would tell them what media the ps2 was reading was cd cdr dvd dvdr ,if its dvdr red screen ,ps2 games dont come on dvdr
this would take no hardware changes, just quick biit of code
the laser nows the difference between dvdr and a pressed dvd ,it has to to be able to read them

sounds good if protection is not added..
:p
lik-sang has added pictures and demonstration videos of the new SCPH-50000. Check them out here (http://www.lik-sang.com/news.php?artc=2927)
Nah. Dust is on the right track.
The only way that sony would release a new model ps2 is because it got better protection against piracy.
Okay, so there's a few gizmo's that should have been on the original anyway thrown in but is that really enough to go redesigning the ps2, I don't think so.

The new 50000 uses the 400c lens.
400c is the lens used in most v7 models. So no improvement there.

We've looked at the 50000 sent to us from Japan and it appears that the non-swap modchips, if they behave similar to Messiah 2, are going to need some re-design.
The CD/DVD points are no longer on nice pads - they revert to the vias like on the v4 systems. So many an amateur with the blowtorch may toast their 5000x in due course!
So with stuff shifted around, there's a lot to do with reading the BIOS, writing and testing code.
I'll try and give another report on Thursday.

figures theyd do somethin like that, time to stock up of v7's lol, because i cant mod a v4 to save my life
v4's aren't that hard, really. The issue is that via's are a pain in the ass to solder to... until you realize that the coating needs to be stripped away so that there's some metal for the solder to stick to.
- Gurm
The soldering ain't really that bad, it just the piss poor laser you have to work with after the mod.
I swear I'm the luckiest guy ever. Two of my v4's now have read +R's after modding with no problem!
- Gurm
U R lucky. We dropped a new laser in my m8's version 4 and sat with a scope setting it up perfectly for about 2 hours amd we still couldn't get it to read GTAViceCity or The Getaway reliably both on traxdata dvd-r. Maybe I should have got him to try dvd+r.

I am authorised by the Messiah 2 Team to announce version 1.31 of the Messiah 2 chip.
This version supports the Jap SCPH 50000.
Subject to regression tests currently being performed on the earlier PS2 models, the new version of Messiah 2 will be in production with the next production batch.
There are no functionality changes in this release.
You gotta love the M2 team.:)

How the hell do they do it?????????
I've only just worked out how a soldering iron works :D
damn right, all the chip developers (especially the M2 team) deserve big respect
anyone got any idea when this PS2 v8 will be released in the UK?
I have HUGE respect to anyone who can even think about modding a PS2 :p . It IS hard as hell and I wouldn't dream of doing it! By the way, my V4R laser is absolutely superb - not one problem, never skipped, never jumped or chopped at all - and it ain't never been cleaned (well, ONCE in two years)! I really am lucky.
