Hi guys,

Got a messiah 2 installed today (previously had an advance chip)....and am rather disappointed so far. It won't play the following games at all - either says "please insert a p2s formatted disc" or sits at a black screen forever:

TimeSplitters 2 (dvd rip)
Extreme G 3
Tony Hawk 3 (dvd rip)
Ninja Assault (dvd rip)
Jeremy McGrath Supercross World
Knockout Kings 2001
Starwars Starfighter

All of these games worked under the old chip. Has anyone had this sort of problem? I was told the Messiah 2 was the best chip to get because it could play everything. Admittedly, it does work for most of the backups that I've got, but not the above 7.

Cheers

Andrew

Where did you get the chip from?

In a suburb named Coburg, in Victoria, Australia - professional install, same place that did my advance chip a year ago

the problems u have seem more like a magic3 not a messiah2

any way I can tell for sure what type of chip I've been given without taking the ps2 apart?

Update: TH3 seems to work about 1 in 8 times. Other games still not happy with life.

Dude, you got screwed. What you're describing (some games boot 1-in-8, some games just don't boot) sounds like a Magic3.

And I'd be HIGHLY suspect, since the Magic3 is less than half the price of a Messiah2. :(

I have EVERY game that was mentioned, and they ALL boot with no problems on the Messiah 2 (and in fact on the original Messiah also)......

Definately sounds like you got a Magic 3 instead of a Messiah 2....:(

took the ps2 back today, the guy assures me that I do have a messiah 2 and that the problem I'm having is caused by a dodgy laser. He took it apart and cleaned it for me, but all of those games still don't work. The laser could be on its way out I guess, a few weeks ago with the old modchip I had a few completely different games that weren't too happy about booting.

I paid $US85 for the chip yesterday - does that sound like a reasonable price for a messiah 2?

That's about $30 too much for a Messiah 2. What version ps2 do you have?

It's a SCPH-30002R. Keep in mind that I'm in Australia, so I just converted the $145 australian into US dollars using the current exchange rate. It's probably also more expensive due to shipping costs to get them over here :(

Is it a v4, v5 or v6? If it is a v4 your laser might not be up to the task.

how do I tell if it's v4, 5 or 6?

That shouldn't make any difference with CDR, only dvd-r and all games mentioned r rips.

Still think u got a magic chip.

Only one way to tell for sure. Have a look, or alternatively take it back to guy who modded, express ur unhappiness and get him to show u that it's a messiah 2 fitted.

Sounds like he bending u over and nailing u.

Sort It!!

Good Luck!!!!!!

It still "could be" the laser...... Over the past month or so, there have been quite a few reports of cd & cd-r games not working BUT DVD & DVD-R games still working fine.....

It doesn't happen very often, BUT the cd reading has been known to go out BEFORE the dvd reading capabilities....

BUT...... I'm still guessing Magic 3..........

Only one way to be 100% sure.

Take a look!!!!

Let us know what happens!!

This is exactly what's happening on my unit - we tried 3 different dvd-rs and they all worked perfectly, it seems to only be cdrs that I'm having trouble with.

I'm certainly willing to take it apart and have a look, but I've got no idea what the messiah 2 or magic 3 chips look like. Anyone got a link to some photos of them?

I agree with the above posts, I have a Messiah 2 and everything boots. I have never had a game not boot. Check out the pics online of the Magic 3 and the Messiah 2 and see what u got. Also it could be a CD-R or DVD-R media problem. If it is burnt on crappy media it could cause boot problems as well. Food for thought.

Usually these days u can't go wrong with cdr media. It seems that any media will boot okay. DVD-r media still developing really so still some snags.

PS2 does have in effect 2 lasers in it ( CD and DVD) so theoretically it could be cd laser diode is knackered but unlikely.

A much more reasonable answer has already been sugested several times on this thread and it won't b the first time we've heard of chippers passing off magic as messiah!

Hope that it all works out okay in the end!!

well, it's official - I have a messiah 2. Took the ps2 apart (first time ever trying that, very happy when it still worked when I put it back together :) ) and it's definitely a messiah 2 chip. So, looks like my cd laser is on the way out. I'll mess about with some different media and see if that will make any difference.

Thanks for all your help and advice guys!
