Please help me figure this out!

these are the steps I am supposed to follow.
Create the following temporary directory:
TempDir#1 : C:\TEMP\CD
TempDir#2 : C:\TEMP\PATCH
Copy the full contents of the original CD to TempDir#1.
Copy the following files from TempDir#1 to TempDir#2:
DATA1.CAB
DATA1.HDR
DATA2.CAB
Remove the Read-Only protection from the above 3 files.
Extract the Executable Archive to TempDir#2.
Extract the I6COMP.EXE from the I6Comp v0.2 archive to TempDir#2.
Open a DOS-Box, CD to TempDir#2 and execute:
i6comp r DATA2.CAB RUNBLACK.EXE
This replaces the original RUNBLACK.EXE with the No-CD Executable.
Copy the following files back from TempDir#2 to TempDir#1:
DATA1.CAB
DATA1.HDR
DATA2.CAB
Burn the contents of TempDir#1 to a CD-R using this CD-Label: BNW
Play the game!



I am stuck where it says to remove the read-only protection from the 3 files. i don't see any files inside those files. how do i open those so i can see the files? is there a program i need to download? If so, where can I get it? I'm desperate here.

right click the file in exporer
select properties
turn off 'read only'
click ok
thats the write protection removed

alternatively in the command window you could type (from the \temp directory of course) attrib /s *.* -r -a -s -h
that'll remove it for all

Is this game Black & White that you are trying to crack.
To remove the read only protection, right click on the files, choose properties and then uncheck Read-only.

However, I suggest you forget about the above method for the time being as using i6comp can be complicated to begin with. I suggest you do this:

1) Create a temporary directory
2) Copy contents of cd to the temp directory
3) Create a folder named 'Crack' in the temp directory
4) In this Crack folder, put the cracked exe file that you downloaded
5) Burn the contents of the temp directory back to CD-R using the same cd-label as the original.

Now when you want to install the game you will have to:
1) Install - always a good start
2) Goto the crack folder on the cd that you created
3) Copy the cracked exe from there into the game directory (wherever the game was installed to). It will ask you do you wish to overwrite the file, you click Yes
4) Play the game.

yes the game is black and white. i decided to use your method. i have one question though. the crack i downloaded isn't an .exe file it's a .rar file. is that ok?

You can extract the rar file using Winrar.
You can decide whether to extract it before putting it on the cd, or leave the extracting to after you install it. I would recommend before.
