when i rip the mafia cd and reburn my isos to cds, the burned cds won't install the game. it says i need cd1 when instlation starts but the burnt cd1 is in the drive. anyone know how to get around this

Yes, mafia contains a copy protection, you're far better of using CloneCD or Alcohol120% to copy the game. Read the other threads about Mafia (use the search button) for more details.
