Hi all , hope it's ok to ask this here, so here I go:
I had a chip in my PS2(Version 5) last week and I had to swap disks(using an AR2 disk) to load all my backup copies of games.
Then I decided to get an all singing and all dancing Messiah 2 chip installed for £100 and thought "gr8 no more swapping disks" but the fact is now it loads even less games than it did before.
GTA vice city (DVD for one) just gives me a black screen after the Sony logo appears briefly. Anyway, after going back to tell the chipper and show him it not loading, he has basically said (after looking at it) that the PS2 must need a new laser as it cant be reading good enough to load Vice City, and the reason I could load all my games before was the AR2 disk was getting the laser past the loading points no problem as its an original disk. It all sounds kinda logical, but my PS2 can load any original game no problem e.g. Vice City , GTA 3, The Getaway..........surely this contradicts what I've been told if it can load all of these games? And he's basically incompetent(rip-off) and trying to fob me off
What do people think?
Is the dodgy lense suggestion total nonsense?
Any replies would be greatly appreciated
(even serves you right ones)

If his name is Gordon & he works on the Barras then no cos he does know his stuff! Try cleaning ur lense firstly, back-up games will fail before originals because they have a lower reflectivity.
When you say "less games" does this mean that some back-ups do load perfectly?
Try loading ur games behind AR2 & see how you get on.

Thx for taking the time to reply Hull_Chipper .
Yes , The Getaway/Stuntman DVD's load/play fine and Pro Evo 2 hangs at kick off every time and some games that loaded after swapping simply dont load, it never did that before with the swap disk method so surely the Messiah 2 should be better in all cases. And it can load GTA3 which is covered in scratches too.

if the games loaded before they would load with the mesiah2
u sure he fitted m2 not something else

He might have fitted a magic chip m8 and telling you that its a messiah 2

To be honest buddy I wouldnt know the difference apart from being able to run copy DVD games that I couldnt run before with the swap disk method (Version 5 PS2).
How can I tell for sure ?

Had a look inside and decided not to go too deep, I'm now planning to tell the dude to take back his messiah 2 and put my Neo 2 chip back in as I dont feel I've had totally accurate or honest advice plus the fact he never mentioned my Neo 2 chip that was in it before he put in the messiah 2. He must think I got it for nothing. Fact is I paid £60 for it and he/they installed it.
Great Customer Service eh
Gary
You had a Messiah 2 put in a system that once had a Neo 2? Not smart. Neo chips kill your laser. This could be why games are no longer working for you. You should have bout a new premodded ps2 with a messiah 2 and sold your old system.

Thx for taking time to reply bighap, That kinda explains things a bit better, I'll maybe get a new PS2 and ask him to transfer it to the new machine and put my Neo2 back in the old one.
Gary
I don't know about this guy you are dealing with. He doesn't sound too good. If you're in the UK, I would send it to charlie_ps2 or dust2dust. They do superb jobs.

test the ps2 with a dvdr film,boot as a ps1 game
if it plays the film them a ps2 game on the same media should boot fine,if it doesnt play then your laser is weak
if ps2 was a v4 or older then u need to be using decent media
most v4 and older will read dvdr but not the cheaper brands

It played movies fine (holding reset for a sec) and the only dvd game that wouldnt run was GTA Vice City which is on a discplanet disk.
Are all your other dvd games on the same media that work ok? If so he probably installed a magic 3 instead of a messaih 2. Magic 3 is known for having problems with GTA VC and Kingdom Hearts.

did u copy GTA VC off ur origional as u said
it was scratched to f*** so maybe thats ur problem
also this guy is a total t** ....... As i think he is using Magic
and not Messiah infact ask the man to reinstall using
Magic 2 it's cheaper and run's everything.........(I THINK!!!)

Well, I just bought another PS2 yesterday and went down to get the Messiah 2 swapped over to the new one. When I went back to collect both PS2's the dude said (to my astonishment)
"The machine you brought in earlier(the one I picked back up from them after they allegedly had a look at it again)has a chip inside that is not our work and it's a magic 3 chip, we know because of the wiring that it's gordons work and we dont know how it got there".
Well, I said "Someone must have broken in to your shop then and soldered it in between Sat and Thu" ,followed by a heated debate with the staff.
To cut a long story short these dudes dunno what the **** happened to my original PS2 and have gave me all the neccessary details to get this one replaced by Sony and a credit note to get a free Neo 2 put back in it when I get it back. So I think basically from the first day I got it back either: A) It was deliberately installed(magic3) B) Or somehow it was mixed up with another machine(incompetence or flymen).
So they basically have gave me this other PS2 back that doesnt work, they've gave me it back thinking I would send it off to Sony right away without checking it first. So there was probably nothing much wrong with my original PS2 and after all the hassle just wanted and end to all the nonsense. So I now have a new machine that seems to be loading everything fine and one thats to be sent to Sony. Obviously if I dont get a replacement machine from Sony I'll be going back down the shop with a Sub-Machine gun and a bottle of whisky.
Gary
Mixup or not, they are up a PS2

If somebody wants to break into my pad & swap a PS2.........................
Likely story m8, from a bunch of chancers who are pished off @ bin found out!
Tell us who they are, so we can warn peeps against dealing with them. As 4 Gordon, there isn't many I trust utterly as knowing their stuff (Charlie_ps2 etc) but he def is genuine!

I think theses dudes at the barras do a lot of chipping and there are probably loads of satisfied customers out there, but I personally wont be doing any more business or recommending them to anyone I know (I like all my friends). All I can say is:
They have a shop.
It's in the heart of the barras(glasgow).
Their front is selling original Console games/accessories in the front shop.
Stone coloured bricks/green shutters/framework
PS2's chipped upstairs(allegedly)
And they all talk the same bull****.
Problem with a chip?
It's your disks
It's your laser
The machine's boggin(dirty)
It's never our chip's m8
If only they actually tried opening the damn thing when I brought it back initially. How many other poor sods are going in there with perfectly good working machines only to be told it's usually the laser getting weak if it wont load a particular game, tell ya what "We could do you a favour" for £20 we'll take out the chip for you (and the whole working inside of your PS2) and give you a broken machine to get replaced by Sony and we'll keep your working machine. Gr8 deal, hope it's still available in the summer.
Avoid like the plague

Sorry m8 - crossed wires here, I thought it was somebody else that chipped ur machine. I never had him down for that sort of trick!

You sound surprised............are they normally ok then and I've just been unlucky ?

Nowt unlucky bout fitting a magic3 & telling u its a messiah2!
I know it goes on but, I'm surprised to hear it of him.
well mate i have had 5 consoles modded by wee gordon and he is bang on!
every one of them worked first time no probs and the PS2 DVD-r's i sometimes get off him (wheneva i can't be bothered downloading them myself)
gordon is a great guy and i would reccomend any1 to him
faz
i got my first ps2 chipped with a messiah from gordon, using his home delivery service. that was great, until my laser packed in.
if u got a new ps2, dont get a neo put in it, get dust 2 put ya a messiah 2 in. they are tha tits

Don't ever get a neo or put a nice new chip in a system that once had a neo in it, you will proabaly have problems down the road.

Thanx to everyone who replied with advice, it's been a gr8 help. I have one last question though:
Will I get a re-conditioned replacement console from Sony if the seal is broken at the back(it says void across the join in a kinda gum/glue) without any problems?
It's a machine that had a chip in it before.
Anyone sent one back before?
