Hi I want to buy a DVD burner to burn PS2 and X-Box games. Will any drive do the trick?

Do I need special media for each the PS2 and X-Box?

Or Does the media just depend on the size of the games?

Could some of You please recomend a nice DVD burner that will burn PS2 and X-box games just fine. Also what type of media I will be needing?

Sorry I'm new to DVD burners and all these different sizes of media got me worried.

Do all DVD-RWs read all types of DVD media?

well if you're looking for a dvd-r/dvd-rw, then go with the Pioneer A04 or A05, or the Cendyne A04/A05. They are the same thing, and do a damn good job. They are retailed at around $200-$300 depending on your area, store and if there is a sale on (there was a sale at staples where you could get an A05 for $150 :D)

They burn cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r, dvd-rw.

There is a Sony burner that also burns DVD+R & DVD+RW, but it is quite a bit more expensive, just so you can burn dvd+, which doesnt have an advantage anyway.

you dont need "special" media, you just need some dvd-r. The best brands of dvd-r would be Apple, TDK, Traxdata, certain Ritek (they also make low grade media) or Verbatim. There might be other's ive forgotten.... I have used Verbatims for about 10+ games now, and they all play great on my v7.

there isnt really different sizes of media, there is the standard 4.7GB dvd-r, and there are some 9.4GB double-sided dvd-r, but they are very expensive.

The Pioneer/Cendyne A04 will read & burn all media, but the A05's current firmware doesnt allow you to burn onto cheap media.

hope it helps.

Hmmm..... I have never had any problem with burning with cheap media..... What media will the A05 not burn?

I have used Princo, Imitation, some unbranded that didn't even have a name......

maybe there was an update?

its firmware 1.21 i believe...

it has reported to not allow burning with certain cheap medias. i dont know exactly which though, im assuming princos.

but some medias (eventhough its illegal) put the ID of different media so it will burn, for example, a crappy Princo dvd-r would have the media ID of a TDK, so the burner recognizes the disc as a TDK dvd-r, when it's actually a princo.

Somebody has posted on the gamegizmo forum that the updated 105 firmware burns +r media as well as -r media!

I'll test in the next few days, anybody else heard/tried this?

Hello people. I bought the Pioneer A05. Now PS2 games backup seems easy enough and looks like even Nero should do it no problem.

I just ordered the "Magic 3.6" modchip for my PS2. I heard good things about the Magic 3.5 but I bought the 3.6 just in case there were some compatibility problems with 3.5.

I should be getting it anytime soon. Now this modchip shopuld be able to boot any PS2 backup no problem on my V7 PS2. I would like to hear from people using the Magic 3.5 if possible. Just to make sure this works as some people say.

Also this +r media and -r media is getting me confused.

How do I know if the blank DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs I buy are -r or +r?

Also does the Pioneer A05 handle both types without any problems?

This +r thing got me thinking since I would like to backup X-Box games and I heard X-Box games should be +r which I still don't know what it means.

Also I found this site selling pretty cheap CDs compared to the prices here in town and I would like some feedback. Are these CDs good enough to backup PS2 and X-Box games?

http://www.yesbuy.net/

DVD-R 4.7 GB (10pcs)

Regular price: $25.00
Sale price: $8.50

DVD-RW 4.7 GB (10pcs)

Regular price: $35.00
Sale price: $10.00

Thanks I hope some of you can help me out here with these questions.

Blank media is clearly marked DVD-R(W) & DVD+R(W) so you can't mix them up. Visit www.blankdiscshop.co.uk, they're the best supplier I know of.

I have also heard peeps saying DVD+R is better for the X-Box but I can assure you DVD-R media works fine on mine.

Glad to see your back Craig (slurp slurp)
I craigs right on this one (hehe) no problems here with dvd-r on xbox plus the discs are less than half the price so i would stick with the pioneer a05 the drives alot cheaper than the dvd+r drives as well and for the money the a05 is an excellent drive for anything ie ps2,xbox,movies. But as you asked the a05 only dose dvd-r

On a seriouse note, a post on modshack has referred to (by more than one person) that the firmware update available for the 105 enables writing to dvd+r!

I have a m8 with a +r drive so I'll nick one of his blanks for test purposes. Let me know if you've heard owt.

you know i got real exited when ThADOoD said $200-$300 for a dvd burner and then i realised that if i converted that to the good ol aussie dollar i will have to pay $600 and over for one, that brought me down to reality. i have got a p/s 2 with raptor chip which is useless to me without a dvd burner so backing up for me is a dream at the moment:eek:
