I think I fried my v4 ps2. I installed a r-mod no solder chip and was playing cd-r backups just fine. Then I tried a dvd-r using the dual swap trick, and it didn't work(DMC, MGS2, and GTA3 were the originals). While trying this I pushed and held the eject button as instructed to put in my dvd-r , and the ps2 powered down and has been dead since-with or w/o the chip. Does anyone have any ideas what happened?
the ps2 powered down when you held eject? wierd???
I'm takin you did the install recently so open it up and make sure that all the ribbon cables are still in the mod. and the mod is pushed in as far as it will go.
If you're still not getting anywhere check the ribbon from the power and eject buttons, it's easy to trap whilst, or when pulling the ps2 apart. If you've ripped that, then check on the net for replacement.
i saw www.lik-sang.com selling them. Let me know how you get on.

Yeah, I checked, re-checked, double & triple checked the connections of the ribbon cable. It still doesn't work even with the r-mod out. I swear, every Sony product I buy is craptacular goodness(meaning-works great when it works).
I had a little trouble installing the r-mod initially(when I would shut the case, the cable would shift a hair and then the eject/reset buttons wouldn't work right). I put a small piece of tape on the back of the ribbon cable to help hold it in better. Worked great(unless that caused this problem somehow).
The thing that really gets me is it worked fine, and then it didn't. No sudden movements or anything. Just pushing(and holding) the eject button. Is there any way the r-mod could have fried something?
Now I am not sure what to do. The reason I didn't go with a M2 in the first place, is that my ps2 is a v4 and it has had the lazer problem with the blue bottom disks-so I don't know how much longer it would last. I actually had to send it in to Sony twice. Now my decisions are these:
1.) Figure out what chip to get, Messiah2, Magic 3.1 or wait until the 25th for that 3rd version one(forgot the name). Then buy a premodded system from somewhere(anybody know anywhere in the US?) or send a new one in for installation.
2.) Decide if the ol' v4 is worth sticking any money into to try and fix it ie: http://www.the-console-corner.com/ps2_ribbon_cable.htm
Just don't know if it will help considering the way is just stopped working.

if i'm correct the v4 ps2 dont support the r-mod no solder chip. that could be the reason ur ps2 fry. you suppose to used the PS2 V4 Mod No Solder Chip not the r-mod chip but i could be wrong.

Um...........if it is not compatable, I think they owe me a new ps2.

Are you getting any power at all? Ie red light (on standby)
If not then make sure that you're ribbon cables haven't become loose on the motherboard too.
It's died at the point the no solder fools the drive.
Can you write your model number down? I know you say ver 4 but whats the number?

My ps2 is a SCPH-30001
There is not an R after or anything. NTSC version.
No juice whatsoever. No lights, no noise, no life. It is as if it is not even plugged in.
Thinking about ordering a new ribbon cable. Don't know what else to do besides buy a new one.
Have you inspected your current ribbon cable. Are there no tears in at or points where it has been crushed?

The ribbon cable is somewhat bent up, but it was that way from the first time I opened it. I have had to send this system into Sony twice to have them fix the lazer problem with blue bottom disks. Fortunately, they covered it and I wasn't skrewd over like so many peeps with the PSX lazerburn problems(including myself). I don't see any tears or anything and it looks to be in the same condition as the first time I saw it.
Is there any way to test the ribbon cable or power up the ps2 without it just so I can check if that is the problem?

I'm experiencing the same problem you are. I also have a v4 no solder chip and it worked for a while and then broke down. I eventually went online and purchased a new ribbon and I tried but still no luck. What are other possibilities for no power to the eject/reset button, and how do i fix them?
