I saw that the Pioneer 104 has another firmware update. I think its 1.4. Is there any real need to jump up? I currently use 1.32(?) and had no problems at all. just curious.

I think the later firmware is to enable your 104 to burn on the new higher speed media without damaging your burner by overheating.

Check the info on Pioneer's web site for more information.

It was an earlier upgrade that added support for high speed media. The Pioneer site says this update "adds Sony media recognition"

i also saw that it says by taking the update it has writing ability.

The ritek dvd-rs say the Pioneer needs to have firmware 1.31 what if i jump up to 1.4, will they still work?

1.31 is the minimun needed. They don't take away any features to the newer firmware, they just add more.

"i also saw that it says by taking the update it has writing ability."

missed a word on the above. It said it had better writing ability. So is there any real need to upgrade if i dont use any 4x media?

No, but some future software might require it. Until that happens it's not a big deal. But it won't hurt to upgrade. Your Ritek will be fine. You usualy only run into problems with pirated versions of firmware.
